Day Trip: Turkey Neck Bend Ferry via Burkesville, back by Tompkinsville Click on headline for story plus 5 photos by Johnnietta Jessie, 2 Frames Turkey Neck Bend in Monroe County, KY, has the Kentucky's only ferry owned and operated by the Commonwealth of Kentucky, "the Cumberland River Ferry." "The Turkey Neck Bend Ferry transports an average of 220 vehicles a day across the Cumberland River at KY 214. A new vehicle barge was put into service earlier this month. It substantially outweighed the old barge, and a more powerful replacement for the current, 25-year old tugboat was needed," a recent article from Commonwealth News Center stated. A stimulus grant of $300,000 announced in July 2009 funded a new tugboat for Turkey Neck Bend; state run ferry offers free crossing for vehicles on KY 214 across the Cumberland River in Monroe County; once privately owned by Cleo Finley, it was purchased by the Commonwealth in 1968 during the Administration of Governor Louie B. Nunn. The community is approximately 50 miles taking KY 61 from the Adair County Courthouse in Columbia, KY, through Burkesville, and then going south to KY 214 and going west to the ferry. Alternatively, the trip to Turkey Neck Bend through Tompkinsville, KY, then east on KY 214 is about five miles farther. Plan on three to four hours for a round trip, including a ride across the river on one of the last remaining free-floating ferries, according to information at ky.gov. The ferry, according to the state site, makes several hundred trips across the river each day. This story was posted on 2009-09-06 12:29:07
