Gov. Beshear thanks Obama administration for farm aid $30 Million announced for the purchase of pork; Kentucky pork producers will benefit, Governor Beshear says The United States Department of Agriculture announced, September 3, 2009, that $30 million will be spent to purchase pork for government feeding programs. This announcement comes after Governor Beshear along with Governors from eight other top pork producing states wrote a letter to President Barack Obama expressing the urgent concern of the current economic status of the U.S. pork industry and the impact on rural America. "Kentucky's pork industry is vital to our agricultural economy and I am thankful to USDA Secretary Vilsack and the Obama Administration for recognizing the struggles the industry is facing," said Gov. Beshear. "This step taken today is critical for the industry in its efforts to stay competitive in a global market." Among the actions requested of the administration, Governors urged President Obama to buy more pork due to the industry facing an economic crisis. In 2008, producers suffered their second worse financial year ever and even though pork products are very safe the announcement of the H1N1 influenza added to the severity of the crisis the industry is facing. The pork industry in Kentucky was valued at an estimated $83 million in 2008, down from nearly $90 million in 2007. This story was posted on 2009-09-04 07:12:24
