Adair County jobless situation shows July improvements

County's rate helped by Walmart, LWC, and IMO, Judge Melton says

ColumbiaMagazine.com special story
Compiled from Kentucky Labor Cabinet statistics

The latest unemployment figures out of Frankfort appear to confirm what Adair County CJE Ann Melton and Columbia-Adair County EDA Director Sue Stivers have been saying, that Adair County's job situation and outlook is much better many of the counties to which Adair Countians have historically commuted to work.

For July, 2009, Adair County performed a hat trick of economic good news, with:

  • The best employment picture in the 7-County Greater Adair County area
  • An unemployment rate below the state average
  • And an unemployment rate below the Lake Cumberland Area Development District average
"I'd have to say, first," Judge Melton said, "that it's easy to spot some big improvements. There's the Walmart employment. And Lindsey Wilson's growth is creating new jobs--just look at the new faculty they've added," she said. "And then our other employers, especially IMO, are giving us good news."

The figures for the Adair and Surrounding Counties are as follows:
  1. Adair County, 10.6%
  2. Casey County, 10.9%
  3. Russell County, 10.9%
  4. Taylor County, 11.5%
  5. Green County, 12.7%
  6. Cumberland County, 12.9%
  7. Metcalfe County, 16%
The statewide unemployment average was 11.0% for July, 2009. The Lake Cumberland average was 11.9%, and only Clinton County had a better unemployment rate than Adair in that 10 county regions. In the neighboring Barren River Area Development District, the unemployment rate was 12.0%. Adair County's rate was lower than all nine of those counties, even Allen, Barren and Warren, and was only slightly below the best unemployment rate in the BRADD area, that of Hart County, which had only 10.2% jobless.

Judge Melton also commented on the growing Adair County Civilian Labor Force in Adair County, which now stands at 9,202, behind only Taylor and Pulaski Counties in the Lake Cumberland Area Development District.

"That number may be indicative of population growth we think we see here. Our hope is that the 2010 count will show quite a bit of improvement. Again, I can't say too much about what Lindsey Wilson College is doing for our community.

Judge Melton says she hopes to see a really positive impact on the city and county populations because of Lindsey Wilson's presence. "The kids who live here are counted here," she said. "Of course Adair County kids living in dorms in other communities are counted there, but, on balance, I think we'll have many more Lindsey students here than there are Adair County students living away from home."
