Campbellsville U. athletic trainers geared up for fall sports Head athletic trainer Derek Port is supported by three full-time assistants, Scott Baughman, Jim Nichols and Tracy Lott, plus five student assistants, Lauren Nolte, Kristen Gordon, and Miriam Lehenbaur, Kevin Metzger and Courtney Keller Click on headline for full story and photo From Campbellsville University Sports Information Department CAMPBELLSVILLE, KY - With rolls of pre-wrap and coach tape dangling from their belts, Campbellsville University's athletic training staff stands ready for the nearly 300 athletes who have reported to campus a week early in preparation for their respective seasons. Head athletic trainer Derek Port has three full-time assistants and five student assistants working the five fall contact sports, along with a stand-by obligation for men's and women's golf. "As they start to practice a little harder, I'm sure we'll be called on more and more," Port said as he watched over a practice football field Sunday evening. "Let's wait until the end of the week when they've had more opportunities for bumps and bruises. Port's full-time staff of Scott Baughman, Jim Nichols and Tracy Lott split duties among the sports. "Each sport has its own trainer," said Port. "It's easier that way so we can get to know the athletes and the history behind their injuries." But the athletic training staff doesn't just tape ankles. They also help mend blisters and oversee stretching. The staff tends to any other injury that might occur and handles 95 percent of any necessary rehabilitation. "There are a few times when we may not have the necessary equipment on campus (for rehabilitation) and, if so, we'll refer the athlete somewhere else." Port said that trainers will work 16-hour days until school starts when they can look forward to 12-hour days. The staff working with football has an early-morning wake-up call at 4:30am in order to begin preparation for the first practice session that begins at 6am. The five student assistants have all expressed an interest in sports medicine and learn training techniques while working with full-time staff. Student assistants include: Lauren Nolte, freshman, and a member of the bowling team; Kristen Gordon, senior; and Miriam Lehenbaur, Kevin Metzger and Courtney Keller, all sophomores. Port said the best advice he could give a student/athlete is to come on campus in reasonable shape and conditioned for the weather under which they might be competing.
