Laura Royse has been selected to participate in the 2009 Macy's Great American Marching Band as one of the select number of students from Tennessee. Laura is a rising junior at Farragut High School in Knoxville, TN, where she is a drum major in the Marching Band, a bassoonist in the Symphonic Band, and a color guard member in the Winter Guard.

"It's interesting how this happened," Dr. David Royse, her father, writes. "We were planning to attend the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade to see the Adair County Band. I was in the band and am a 1977 ACHS graduate. Since we were going anyway, my daughter decided to audition for Macy's Great American Marching Band," and adds, "To our delight, she was accepted and will be in the band."

Granddaughter of James and Zona Royse, Columbia, KY

She is the daughter of David and Molly Royse of Knoxville and the granddaughter of James and Zona Royse of Columbia. Laura will be marching in the flag section of Macy's Great American Marching Band during the 2009 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City.

Students were selected based on their musical ability and past achievements. The opportunity was open to students from over 14,000 high schools across the United States.

Stepping-off from Central Park, the Band will be cheered by 2.5 million live spectators, before arriving at Macy's Herald Square for their national performance for more than 50 million TV viewers watching the broadcast live on NBC.

The students will have the chance to participate in this prestigious band with over 200 students, representing every state. The musicians, under the direction of Dr. Richard Good, Auburn University, and Ohio State University's Dr. Jon Woods, will be complemented by approximately 50 flags and dancers choreographed by Greg Lagola of the famed Cadets Drum Corps of Pennsylvania.

The students will also have the opportunity to attend a workshop led by Fran Kick, creator and presenter of a series of self-motivational personal leadership materials. The workshop will focus on contribution, attitude, leadership, and the discipline of focus.

In addition to marching in the parade, all selected participants' package plans will include meals, lodging and New York City sightseeing (Zephyr Cruise, Top of the Rock, Thanksgiving dinner/dance and the Radio City Christmas Spectacular).
