Adair County 9-10 All Stars District 5 Championship Game 3

All-Stars defeat Albany 21-3 to go into final preliminary game today in Campbellsville, KY

By Greg Scott

The Adair County 9/10 All Star baseball team awoke from their game 2 slumber and brought out their long ball game to explode on to the scoreboard in a mercy rule shortened, four inning game three, besting the All Star team from Albany 21-3 Friday night, July 10, 2009, in Campbellsville, KY.

The victory puts Adair at 3 and 0 in the District 5 tournament and secures their berth in the championship competition for the District 5 title next week.

Adair Shortstop McGregor Scott led off the action reaching first on an infield hit and was advanced to second on a nice sacrifice bunt by center fielder Miller Young, advancing Scott to third on an error by the Albany first baseman.

Will Myers walked and stole second to put two runners in scoring position for Adair. Starting pitcher Brett Burton earned a double and drove in the first two runs on a near home run that hit three feet up the four foot fence in dead center field. Burton advanced to third on a passed ball and Shea Martin walked and stole second to set up the next two runs for Adair.

Second baseman Clark Dean to his turn with the long ball, driving a 3-1 fastball to the fence for a double and 2 RBIs. Dean later advanced to third on a passed ball and center fielder Parker Staten walked to put runners at the corners for Adair.

Third Baseman Corey Melton drove a first pitch fastball to the fence on one hop for the third double of the first inning and another Adair run, scoring Dean and advancing Staten.

Lead off batter Scott stepped to the plate for the second time in the first inning marking the first of three times Adair would bat around in the game. Scott walked on four pitches to load up the bases for Miller Young.

Young took his first pitch down the third base line to pick up three RBIs, driving in Staten, Melton, and Scott who tore up the base path scoring all the way from first base. Young was tagged out sliding back into second base for the third out when he attempted to advance to third on the play at home on Scott.

Albany came to the plate but was unable to make contact with the ball as starting pitcher Burton struck out the side with 12 pitches to give Adair a commanding 8-0 lead after one.

Adair first baseman Will Myers led off the second with a walk followed by a single by Burton. Shea Martin grounded into a fielder's choice which took Myers out at third for the first out. Clark Dean managed to reach on an error which brought in the first run of the inning when Burton scored from second. Jameson Miller reached on another error by the Albany infield to drive in another run.

Melton then took another ball deep to the outfield, placing it in the gap to bring in Dean and Melton for two RBIs. Shortstop Scott drove in another run and beat out the throw once again on a bobbled ball by the Albany shortstop. Finally, Miller Young drove yet another Adair long ball to the fence and stretched what should have been a double into a triple by turning on his speed to beat the throw from the outfield, and pick up his fourth RBI of the game and extend the Adair lead to 14-0.

The bottom of the second saw Burton continue his pitching dominance over the Albany lineup, fanning the first and fourth batters of the inning. Shortstop McGregor Scott laid out for a nice diving catch, chasing the ball backwards into short left field, for the second out and preserving Burton's no-hitter through two innings.

Adair extended their offensive dominance in the third inning when Burton reached on a single and right fielder Shea Martin drilled an 0-2 pitch over the right field fence for a two run home run. Back to back walks to Clark Dean and Jacob Doss set up another RBI for Melton as he stroked a single to the outfield. Scott picked up the next RBI on another Adair single driving in Melton.

After reaching second on a passed ball, Scott took a huge lead and enticed a throw from the catcher which went wide of its mark and allowed Scott to score. Young then reached on an error by the Albany shortstop, advancing around the bases to third. Myers reached on a walk and proceeded to steal second on the next pitch drawing a throw down by the catcher which allowed Young to score from third. A strikeout and a fielder's choice completed the seven run at bat. In the bottom of the third a strikeout, fly out, and ground out by Albany preserved Burton's no hitter through three innings and left the score at 21-0.

Two fielder's choices and a fly out to center brought the Adair scoring streak to an end in the top of the fourth. Unfortunately, the errors returned for the Adair defense in the bottom of the fourth to allow Albany to rack up three runs before relief pitcher Miller Young could shut down the action and seal the Adair victory with two strikeouts and ground out to first base.

The Adair County 9/10 All Stars are now 3-0 in the series going into their final preliminary round game this afternoon, Saturday, July 11, 2009 at 4:00pmCT at City Park in Campbellsville, KY
