Adair Co. 910 All Stars District 5 Championship Game 2

By Greg Scott

In what could best be described as a less than perfect showing, the Adair County 9/10 All Stars secured their second District 5 Tournament win, 8-7 over the team from Marion County, after squandering a comfortable four run lead on a rash of errors in the top of the sixth inning on Wednesday night.

The energy level was low and the mistake level was high for the Adair All Stars leading to speculation among coaches and fans that late nights at the county fair may be to blame. It is either that, or the boys need a little drama in the game to keep things interesting, and they did not disappoint.

Starting pitcher Will Myers logged only 10 pitches in the top of the first inning, fanning one Marion County batter and forcing two others into routine ground outs.

The Adair All Stars started off the bottom of the inning with a nice single up the middle by short stop McGregor Scott, who quickly stole second base and reached third on a passed ball.

Third batter Myers drilled a 1-1 pitch deep into the outfield for a double and an RBI to put Adair on the board. Clean-up batter Brett Burton placed a nice line drive into right center field to drive in Myers, but was tagged out when caught in a pickle between first and second while trying to extend the hit onto a double.

The three hit inning put Adair up 2-0 after one.

Marion County answered with one run on two infield errors in the top of the second in what turned out to be a foreshadowing of things to come for the rest of the game.

Adair adds two runs in bottom of second inning

Adair was able to add two runs to their total in the bottom of the second. Left fielder Shea Martin was hit by a 3-1 pitch to start off the inning but was forced out on a fielder's choice on catcher Jacob Doss' at bat. Doss advanced to second base on another fielder's choice by right fielder Corey Melton, placing Doss in scoring position with two outs.

Third baseman Jameson Miller walked to put two runners on base. McGregor Scott drilled his second single of the night up the middle to score Doss and advance Miller. Center fielder Miller Young reached on an error by the Marion second baseman, driving in the second run of the inning. A walk by Myers loaded up the bases, but Adair was not able to capitalize and stranded three on base at the end of the inning to leave the score at 4-1, Adair.

Marion added two runs to their total on two more Adair errors in the top of the third, but Myers was able to strikeout the last two outs of the inning to limit the damage. The bottom of the third inning saw Adair ground out to the first baseman, fly out to center on a nice drive by Shea Martin, but a nice catch by the Marion center fielder, and strike out to keep the score at 4-3 Adair after three.

Adair pitcher Will Myers picked up his fifth strikeout of the game in a scoreless top of the fourth for Marion County. Adair exploded in their half of the inning, batting around, and picking up three more runs in an exciting five hit rally.

Left fielder Parker Staten led it off with a single followed quickly by two more singles by McGregor Scott and Will Myers to load the bases. Jameson Miller was sent in to pinch run for Staten and the move paid off for Adair as Miller stole home when the Marion pitcher turned his back on the speedy runner.

The commotion also advanced the runners to second and third. First baseman Brett Burton picked up two more RBIs on a drive to right center field, but decided to remain at first this time for a single. Shea Martin also picked up a single to advance Burton and Jacob Doss walked to load the bases another time for Adair, but once again they were unable to capitalize and left three on the bags in the bottom of the fourth, to make the sc! ore 7-3 after four.

The top of the fifth brought a pitching change for Adair. Myers reached his 75 pitch limit after four, so coach Chad Myers called on Clark Dean to take the mound. Dean threw a total of eight pitches and struck out one in a stellar, three up, three down pitching performance. In their turn at bat, Adair was unable to score as the Marion County pitching and defense came through to strand two runners on base and hold the score at 7-3 in the fifth.

Marion pounced on the opportunity handed to them by Adair in a dramatic top of the sixth. Four errors by the Adair infield allowed Marion to add four runs on no hits and brought the score to a 7-7 tie going into the bottom of the last inning.

Adair started off their half of the inning with a strikeout and a walk by number six batter Shea Martin. The speedy Martin capitalized on two passed balls to advance to third base, but Adair quickly picked up another out on a strikeout, bringing Corey Melton to the plate with two outs and the winning run on third.

Melton jumped on the first pitch and bounced it down to the third baseman. Distracted by the runner going home, the Marion third baseman threw the ball into the dirt and skipped it by the first baseman, allowing Melton to reach on the error and the winning run to score in a dramatic finish to the error filled game.

The Adair 9/10 All Stars are now 2-0 in the tournament and they play their third game at 7:00pmCT at City Park in Campbellsville on Friday, July 10, 2009.
