July 4th 2008: A wonderful day of fireworks and more Accompanying album contains photos from Columbia, from home fireworks displays, and Campbellsville Click on headline for full story, July 4th fireworks album Special ColumbiaMagazine.com story A large crowd gathered near the fairgrounds as well as inside the gates for a 20 minute Fourth of July fireworks display at 9:00pmCT, despite a steady rain. None were disappointed with the much longer show, as they stood, some under umbrellas, some making canopies of hatchback doors, and most just standing in the light drizzle which continued throughout the show. The huge display from the fairground was augment by fireworks from private areas on Wain ST, from on top of the hill in Young ST, and from the Hill on KY 206. There were two segments in the grand finale. Graham Waggener, 7, of Shelbyville, KY, is a regular Thunder over Louisville, said the Columbia show was "awesome, the best he'd ever seen." His father, who photographed the show, noted the difference in travel time and settling in time, "Ten minutes vs. three hours is a nice advantage, too," he said.
