Treehuggers have chance to visit Adair's famous Chestnut tree Kentucky Chapter of the American Chestnut Foundation will be conducting its annual meeting her in Columbia, KY, at Cranmer Dining Center, on Saturday, June 27, 2009. The meeting is open to the publlic By Barbara Armitage I am a tree hugger and proud of it! This is really something you should take time for if you can please join the members of the Adair County Garden Club on Saturday, June 27, 2009. The meeting will be held at Lindsey Wilson College at the Robert C. Cramner Dining Center, 430 Helen Flatt DR, Columiba, KY beginning at noon CT. The Kentucky Chapter of the American Chestnut Foundation will be conducting its annual meeting here in Columbia, KY, and the Adair County Garden will be in attendance. This meeting is open to the public and you do not have to be a member to attend. Scott Freidhof, president of the Kentucky chapter will speak. Follow the link to the American Chestnut Foundation to learn more about the blight that nearly wiped out the American Chestnut in the early 1900's and the research that is currently being conducted to breed a new blight resistant tree.. Everyone is asked to please be there 20 minutes early in time to be seated for lunch (on your own). The meeting will focus on who the American Chestnut Society is and what they are doing to save the nearly extinct American Chestnut tree. The presentation will include comments on the current tree "breeding" program and information on chestnut research. Seedling trees will be available for those interested in the restoration program. At approx 1:00 the meeting will adjourn in order to carpool out to the site of the largest Chestnut tree in Kentucky and possibly the U.S. As many of you already know Kentucky's largest (and oldest?) American Chestnut tree is right here in Adair County.In fact it's right here on the road I live on.This promises to be very interesting and I hope that you take the time to join us.
