Caitlyn Abell graduates Summa Cum Laude from WKU

Caitlyn Elizabeth Abell , the 20 year old daughter of Paul and Cathy Abell of Bowling Green, graduated Summa Cum Laude from Western Kentucky University with a major in Mathematics and a minor in Animal Science and Biology. She is a graduate of both the Ogden College of Science and Technology and the Honors College.

Caitlyn is the granddaughter of Gene and Joyce Hoots of Columbia and James and Mary Abell of Knifley



This summer Caitlyn is in completing an internship at the National Headquarters of the American Simmental Association in Montana. She was also selected as one of 16 students from around the world to receive the International Livestock Congress- Calgary Student Fellowship. She will be attending the Congress in July in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

In the Fall, she will be entering graduate school at Iowa State University. She received both an assistantship and a Miller Graduate Fellowship.br>
Awards and honors Caitlyn received at WKU included an Honors Development Grant to support her honors thesis and the Henry M. and Zula G. Yarbrough Award in Mathematics. She was also a member of the Pi Mu Epsilon Math Honor Society, the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, the Gamma Sigma Alpha Academic Greek Honor Society, and selected to the Hall of Distinguished Seniors.

She completed a research project, Fluroescence Quenching Studies of Quinie Sulfate, with a faculty member in the Chemistry department and presented a poster at the 37th Annual WKU Student Research Conference. Additionally, she completed a summer internship at Iowa State University for her Honors thesis and defended her thesis entitled The Effect of Breeding Herd Parity Structure on Genetic Improvement of the Sow Herd."

Other endeavors Caitlyn was engaged in included working as an undergraduate student assistant in the Department of Animal Science and a peer tutor in the Learning Center. She was also in extracurricular activities including being in the Phi Mu Sorority and participating in various community activities including the St. Judes Children Research Hospital Fundraiser and Up Til Dawn event, Bowling Green 10K, Phi Mu gold Scramble, Ph Mu calendar Pageant, and the March of Dimes walk. She also served on the Student Government Association Appropriations Committee.
