Obituary: Dollye Ellen Burchett Hale, 88, Oakland, IL

Mrs. Hale was the widow of Orville Hale and the matriarch of a prominent, respected family with strong roots in Adair and Russell Counties, KY. She leaves 53 living descendants. She was a member of Gully Creek Baptist Church in Monroe Co., KY, was a homemaker, devoted mother, gifted seamstress, and an ardent patriot. She has many relatives in the Adair-Russell County, KY area. She will be buried in Illinois. Memorials are directed to Columbia Baptist Church Library Fund or First Christian Church Library Fund in Mattoon, IL

OAKLAND, IL - Dollye Hale, age 88 of Oakland, went to be with her Lord at 9:38pmCT, Wednesday, May 27, 2009, surrounded by her family.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00pmCT, Sunday, May 31, 2009, at Standard Funeral Home, 215 E Main ST, Oakland, IL, with Reverend Ron Mulvaney officiating. Burial will be in Villa Grove Cemetery. Friends may call after noon on Saturday at Standard Funeral Home in Oakland, where the family will be present for visitation from 4:00 to 7:00pmCT Saturday evening.



Dollye Ellen was born on December 27, 1920 in the Rockhouse area of Russell County, KY. She was the daughter of Hiram H. and Exona Reeder Burchett, and was educated in the country schools of Russell County, KY. On September 23, 1937 she married Orvil W. Hale in Columbia, KY, and he preceded her in death on November 30, 1972.

Survivors include the following:
  • Six children: JoAnn McQueen and husband Bill of Oakland, IL; Rachel Proffitt of Mattoon, IL; Dwight Hale of Savannah, TN, LaVerne Jessee and husband Gene of Columbia, KY; Walt Hale and wife Sherrill of Conway, AR: and Carol Boyer and husband Terry of Mattoonm UK

  • Eight grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great-grandchildren; and special cousin Edith Burris of Villa Grove
She was preceded in death by her husband, two sons, Darrell Hale and Timmy Hale, one infant daughter Dana Hale, one great-grandson, daughter-in-law Tommie Hale, and five brothers, including Walter Burchett and Rollin Burchett.

Dollye was a homemaker and loving wife and mother. She was a member of the Gully Creek Baptist Church in Tompkinsville, KY. Dollye was an avid gardener and reader, and enjoyed quilting, sewing, baking and displaying her patriotism. Her family was very important to her, and she enjoyed helping her daughter and son-in-law at Olde Barn Sporting Clays in Oakland, IL.

A memorial fund is being established for either the Columbia Baptist Church Library Fund in Columbia, KY, or the First Christian Church Library Fund in Mattoon.
