Lindsey Wilson Women's Tennis advances to NAIA's second round

LWC next faces California Baptist at 1:00pmCT today

MOBILE, AL - The Lindsey Wilson College women's tennis team advanced to the NAIA National Championships' second round with an 8-1 win over Missouri Valley College in today's opening round at the Mobile Tennis Center.



The Blue Raiders advance to play No. 6-seeded California Baptist University -- who earned one of the tournament's eight first round byes -- at 1:00pmCT on Wednesday.

Lindsey Wilson (11-4) dominated from the beginning taking a 3-0 lead after the doubles session.

Lindsey Wilson junior Jessica Weyreuter and freshman Vanja Tomic defeated Missouri Valley's Elanqua Griffin and Nicki Erickson at No. 1 doubles and freshman Trina Slapeka and sophomore Darya Yablonskaya beat Tershelle Burrows and Juliana Doyle by identical 8-1 scores.

LWC junior Agnieszka Wojtowicz and junior Lindsey Sheene closed out doubles with an 8-6 win over Davina Holtfreter and Lindsay Tworek to take the 3-0 lead into singles action.

  • #1 - Jessica Weyreuter/Vanja Tomic (LW) def. Elanqua Griffin/Nicki Erickson (MV) 8-1
  • #2 - Trina Slapeka/Darya Yablonskaya (LW) def. Tershelle Burrows/Juliana Doyle (MV) 8-1
  • #3 - Agnieszka Wojtowicz/Lindsey Sheene (LW) def. Davina Holtfreter/Lindsay Tworek (MV) 8-6
Singles:
  • #1 - Slapeka (LW) def. Griffin (MV) 6-0, 6-2
  • #2 - Tomic (LW) def. Erickson (MV) 6-1, 6-1
  • #3 - Weyreuter (LW) def. Burrows (MV) 6-1, 6-1
  • #4 - Yablonskaya (LW) def. Doyle (MV) 6-0, 6-0
  • #5 - Wojtowicz (LW) def. Holtfreter (MV) 6-0, 6-3
  • #6 - Tworek (MV) def. Sheene (LW) 7-5, 6-0
  • The Blue Raiders top five singles all won in straight sets to help Lindsey Wilson to the 8-1 win.
