Breath-taking expansion in relatively short time, says President Luckey

By Duane Bonifer

COLUMBIA, Ky. - Lindsey Wilson College will cap off its largest class in college history on Saturday, May 9, 2009.

Lindsey Wilson's 89th commencement ceremony will be held at 10amCT on Saturday, May 9, 2009, in the college's Biggers Sports Center, 360 Spickard Drive, Columbia, KY. A total of 161 undergraduate and graduate degrees will be conferred. Combined with the 325 degrees conferred at the winter commencement, the Class of 2009 stands at 486 students - the largest in the college's 109-year history.

To put that number in perspective, a total of 135 degrees were conferred during the 2002-03 school year. That represents a 260 percent increase in graduates over the last six school years.

"It's breath-taking when you realize how much this college has expanded in a relatively short amount of time," said Lindsey Wilson President William T. Luckey Jr., who will oversee his 11th spring commencement ceremony since becoming the college's eighth president. "To appreciate how much Lindsey Wilson has grown this decade, simply compare the number of this school year's graduates with our Class of 2003."

This year's commencement speaker will be Adair County native, State Sen. Vernie McGaha of Russell Springs, KY.

McGaha, who was first elected to the Kentucky General Assembly in 1996, represents the 15th District, which includes Adair, Casey, Pulaski, and Russell counties. He will also receive an honorary doctorate from the college. Also being honored at the ceremony with an honorary doctorate for their service to the commonwealth are businessman Charles Bennett of Hardinsburg, Ky., and longtime Lindsey Wilson trustee Pete Mahurin of Bowling Green, KY.

McGaha is ACHS graduate

McGaha is an Adair County High School graduate who had a distinguished career as an education leader in Russell County before entering politics. In the General Assembly, McGaha is respected by his colleagues on both sides of the aisle for his integrity and principled leadership. He is chairman of the Government Contract Review Committee, which provides legislative review of all agreements made by and between state agencies and all contracts made by state agencies and off-budget entities. He is also chairman of the Budget Review Subcommittee on Education.

McGaha serves as vice chairman of the Senate Agricultural Committee and the Education Committee, and he is a member of the Appropriations and Revenue Committee.

"We are pleased to honor these three individuals because they epitomize what it means to be a public servant," Luckey said. "But the real story on May 9 will be our graduates, their family members and this very special day in their lives."Commencement weekend gets under way at 5:00pmCT on Friday, May 8, 2008 with the annual Senior Banquet. Hosted by the Lindsey Wilson National Alumni Association, the dinner at Roberta D. Cranmer Dining & Conference Center honors graduating baccalaureate seniors and their guests. The keynote address will be given by Assistant Professor of History Melinda Senters, who was named 2008-09 Teacher of the Year by the LWC Student Government Association.

The Rev. Terry Faris will deliver the message at the baccalaureate ceremony, which will be at 7:00pmCT on Friday, May 8, 2009 in Biggers Sports Center, 360 Spickard Drive (off Fairgrounds ST), Columbia, KY. A native of Maysville, Ky., Faris retired last June after 44 years of service to Kentucky Methodism.

Following the commencement ceremony, the college will host a reception for graduates and their families in Cranmer Dining & Conference Center, 430 Helen Flatt Drive, Columbia, KY.For more information about 2009 spring commencement weekend at Lindsey Wilson, contact the Alumni Office at alumni@lindsey.edu or (270) 384-8400.
