BJ Fudge: On pickett, and paling or slat fences About: Memorable Old Columbia KY from Hill of Lindsey Wilson 1909" Hey Ed, Is that the steeple of the Presbyterian Church I can see against the treed background off to the south of the Courthouse? Also, a paling fence is sometimes referred to as a picket fence, but a picket fence is made of sawed and identically sized pickets. However the correct name, slat fence, was and is common vernacular in the Great Wooded South. A slat fence or paling fence is made up of split slats not sawed pickets. There was an aversion to using the term paling in the Great Wooded South because of its reference to a Pale. A Pale was an area of a land or countryside within a country set apart to exclude or restrict the movements of inferior citizens. Most notable "inferiors" were Jews in Russia, English in France, etc. s/Billy Joe Fudge This story was posted on 2009-05-01 07:09:38
