The present day underclassmen and future of ACHS Academic Team was on display at the annual Derby Festival Academic Challenge at Bellarmine University in Louisville this past weekend.

The team competed in the three-day statewide tournament against all of the top programs across the state, from Pikeville to Paducah, from Louisville to Lexington.

Head-to-head with Louisville's best

On Thursday, April 23, 2009, the team went head-to-head with the best teams from Louisville surrounding area and advanced to the final tournament rounds on Saturday.

The team finished the day with a top 10 overall finish, losing only to Dupont Manual--who eventually took the grand championship--and Pikeville High School--a perennial top 5 team in the state.

ACHS finishes in 1st pace overall in written assessment!

ACHS did have the distinction, however, of finishing in 1st place overall in the written assessment portion of the tournament, yet another first-time achievement in school history and an amazing accomplishment among this level of competition.

The Derby Festival Academic Challenge is an annual event that serves as a preview to the upcoming years competition and as a follow-up to the KAAC Governor's Cup.

It features only 10th grade and 9th grade students. All of KAAC's top teams and programs attend this event each year, and Adair County has finished among the finalists and advanced to the Sweet 16 in three of its four attempts over the last four years.

The team was represented this weekend by Luke Maupin, Ryan Montgomery, Jake Leibeck, Eddie Franklin, Melanie Alexander, Kyle Mann, Mary Susan Coomer, and Noah Richard.
