Faces of Adair County, KY: James Ray Hammond
2009-04-19 - VFW Hall, Fairgrounds ST, Columbia, KY - Photo by Caleb Irvin. Nobody has seen more of the country hitchhiking than James Ray Hammond. The treasured Adair Countian was photographed above waiting for an event at the VFW Hall; he's as diligent as any in the county to support all public functions. But more of the time, he's on the go, hopping a ride with friends, to places as far away as Chicago, IL. He finances the jaunts with personal funds and contributions from supporters and fans and folks along the way. Tens and twenties are nice amounts, but less is appreciated, too. He's got the travelbug and he's travel savvy. He prefers trucks, the bigger, the better. One truck driver recalls Mr. Hammond arranging a ride home with him at a freight dock in Chicago, only to miss him a few minutes later. He worried all the way home, he says, but the first person he saw on the Square in Columbia, KY, when he arrived, was James Ray Hammond.
