LWC Basketball (W) meets Westmont in NAIA 1st Round

The Lindsey Wilson College womens basketball team plays Westmont (CA) College at 9:45pmCT on Wednesday, March 18, in the 2009 NAIA Division I Womens Basketball National Championship at Oman Arena in Jackson, TN.

Lindsey Wilson (24-8) and Westmont (22-8) each received an at-large after losing in their conference tournaments last week. The Blue Raiders are the No. 5-seed while the Warriors earned the No. 4-seed in one of the four quarters. This is the first-ever meeting between the two programs.



Lindsey Wilson enters the national tournament winners of nine out of their last 11 games.

The Blue Raiders are led by Mid-South Conference Player of the Year Viktoria Krell. The sophomore center averages 17.8 points (14th in the NAIA) and 10.5 rebounds (4th) per game. She also ranks third in the nation in double-doubles (18) and 24th in the NAIA in field goal percentage at 50.8 percent.

Krell is joined by all-conference junior guard Sierra Rambert (16.2 points per game).

No. 17-ranked Lindsey Wilson, as a team, ranks in the top-20 in six statistical categories, including fifth in rebounding margin (+9.4), 10th in three-point field goal defense (28.3 percent) and 19th in both rebounds per game (41.1) and field goal percentage (43.8).

The Blue Raiders are making the program's sixth all-time appearance in the national tournament. Lindsey Wilson is 1-5 all-time after winning the program's first-ever game in last season's tournament. The Blue Raiders are 2-4 against the tournament field this season.

No. 16-ranked Westmont enters the tournament losing five of its last six games after opening the season 21-3.

Junior guard Amber Stevens earned all-conference honors after leading the team in both rebounds (6.2 per game) and assists (4.6). She also averages 9.8 points per game. Junior guard Jessica Case leads the Warriors in scoring averaging 12.2 points per game.

Westmont ranks 16th in the NAIA in scoring defense allowing its opponents to score just 58.3 points per game. The Warriors rank 21st in three-point field defense (29.4) and 23rd in scoring margin (+10.6).Westmont is making its fifth appearance at the national tournament. The Warriors are 1-4 all-time with their one win coming in 2004 against another Mid-South Conference team, University of the Cumberlands (Ky.). Westmont is 4-6 against the tournament field this season.

The Lindsey Wilson-Westmont winner plays the winner of No. 1-seed and top-ranked Union (TN) University and No. 8-seed Jarvis Christian (Texas) University on Friday, March 20, 2009. The national championship game is March 24, 2009.
