LWC Men's Basketball faces TX Wesley in NAIA 1st round

By Chris Wells, LWS Sports Information Director

The Lindsey Wilson College men's basketball team plays Texas Wesleyan University at 9:45pmCT on Thursday, March 19, in the 2009 Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men's Basketball National Championship at Municipal Auditorium Kansas City, MO.

Lindsey Wilson (23-8) is one of 16 unseeded teams after earning an at-large bid into the tournament. No. 10-seeded Texas Wesleyan (26-3) earned one of the conference's two automatic bids for being the Red River Athletic Conference regular season champion. It is the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

Lindsey Wilson enters the tournament as one of the top defensive teams in the NAIA. The Blue Raiders are ranked seventh in the nation in both scoring defense (63.2) and field goal percentage defense (39.3), ninth in blocks (4.5) and 11th in three-point field goal percentage (29.7).

All-conference junior guard Eric McPherson leads the Blue Raiders in both scoring (16.5) and rebounding (5.9). McPherson is the only Blue Raider to average double digits, but nine players average at least five points per game in the balance attack.

Lindsey Wilson -- ranked No. 22 in the final coaches' poll -- is making its ninth all-time appearance. The Blue Raiders are 6-8 all-time including a pair of quarterfinal appearances (2004, 2006). LWC is 3-5 this season against teams that made the 32-team field.

Texas Wesleyan enters the tournament following its first loss -- a 79-72 loss to Jarvis Christian (TX) University in the Red River Tournament finals -- in 19 games.

The Rams also boast a stingy defense allowing their opponents to shoot 38.9 percent from the field -- fifth in the NAIA -- and 29.2 percent from three-point range which ranks sixth best in the NAIA. Texas Wesleyan also ranks in the NAIA's top-10 with 18.1 assists per game (third) and eighth in the nation out-rebounding its opponents by an 8.4 margin.

Senior forward Chris Berry leads the Rams and ranks fifth in the NAIA in scoring averaging 21.4 points per game. Senior Kennith Gober (14.7) and junior Terrell Henry (13.5) also average double digits.

The No. 10-ranked Rams are making their 10th all-time appearance. Texas Wesleyan is 11-8 all-time at the national tournament, including winning the 2006 national championship. The Rams are 5-3 this season against the field.

The Lindsey Wilson-Texas Wesleyan winner plays the winner of No. 7-seed McKendree (IL) University and unseeded Northwestern Oklahoma State University on Friday, March 20, 2009. The national championship game is March 24, 2009.
