Obituary: Charles David Blaydes, Adair Co.

Mr. Blaydes was a member of prominent west Adair County family. He was a retired farmer of the Keltner Community, a veteran of World War II who, as an MP in Japan, guarded General MacArthur's plane. He will be accorded military honors by Columbia VFW Post 6097

Charles David Blaydes was born July 18, 1924, to Robert J. and Beulah Stephens Blaydes in the Keltner community of Adair County. He departed this life on Tuesday, February 24, 2009, at 7:13amCT at the Metcalfe Health Center in Edmonton, KY.

The funeral service will be Friday, February 27, 2009, at 1:00pmCT, at Grissom-Martin Funeral Home in Columbia, KY, with Bro. Joseph Wilcoxson officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery with military honors presented by VFW Post 6097. Visitation will be after 4:00pm, Thursday, February 26, 2009, at Grissom-Martin Funeral Home, 200 Campbellsville ST, Columbia, KY.

Charles was a World War II veteran, serviing in Japan. He had the privilege of being an MP with the duty of guarding the plane of General MacArthur.

He chose to stay on the family farm until a disabling aneurysm in 1977.

He was married to Gladys Murrell Blaydes, who preceded him in death on June 13, 2008.

He is survived by the following:
  • A son: Gary (Tamara) Blaydes, Center, KY

  • Two daughters: Charlote (Tommy) Atkins; and Elle Lee (Forrest), of Center, KY

  • One sister: Susie Pryor, Memphis, TN

  • Seven grandchildren: Haley, Hannah, and Hilary Blaydes, Jonathan (Teri) Atkins, Eric (Beth) Atkins, Beth (Tommy) Thompson, Greg Wilson

  • Eight great grandchildren: Molly, Lane, and Leah Thompson; Luke, Ema and Cole Wilson, and Bree and Mallory Russell

  • And a host of other relatives and friends.
