Favorite old photograph: Pellyton Church, Pellyton, KY

2009-01-12 - Pellyton, District 1, Adair County, KY - Photo from the collection of Joyce M. Coomer.
WHEN PELLYTON HAD A MASONIC LODGE BUILDING "My cousin had had this picture for many years and recently sent it to me," writes Joyce M. Coomer of Printing Creations, Columbia, KY. "It is of the Pellyton Church, Pellyton, Adair County, KY. When this picture was taken, the Masonic Lodge used the second story for their meeting place," my mother, Etwol Thomas Evans, told me. "When the Masonic Lodge moved to Roley, Ray Thomas and Jim Pelly removed the second story and the lumber was used to build the Masonic Lodge at Roley. The lower story of the church is still there and still in use. I'm not sure what the name of the road is that the church is located on but it was theroad used before Highway 206 was built," she continues. "The picture in the second volume of Adair County: A Pictorial History of Don and Gerald Dosswas taken in the churchyard,as well assome other pictures of groups of people in front of the church. After the UMC decided to close the church in the mid-1990's, people from the community purchased the property. Momma's funeral was held in the church on 5 January 2000." Readers of the old Adair County News and Daily Statesman will remember Etwol Evans as one of the all time favorite community correspondents, who wrote the news from Pellyton, KY, every week. If anyone has a photo of the Masonic Lodge in Roley, we'd love to post and link to this photo.
