Looking Ahead: Writer says dry C-AC = economic backwater This "Yes" vote brings the percentage in the wet moist survey to 69% for wet/moist, 31% against Glens Fork writer says burden on retiree recruitment posed by dry conditions; notes that a nationally-known Bluegrass musician dreamed of settling here until he was told Adair County is dry. He is now looking elsewhere, writer reports To ColumbiaMagazine.com: What has not been addressed in any length in the debate about whether Adair County should allow the sale of alcohol is the effect this issue has upon economic development in the county. It is my strong belief that Adair County will not attract significant new industry/investment or attract significant new recreational income until and unless the sale of alcohol is made legal here. And, finally, what about attracting more retirees to the county -- retirees who contribute significantly to the local economy? A friend of mine, a nationally-known Bluegrass musician, visited us here last Fall while he and his wife were looking for land to buy in anticipation of retiring in the next few years. He loved "the lay of the land" in Adair County and talked about opening a small restaurant where, in addition to serving fine food, musicians would gather to play music. He talked on about his dream until we told him that Adair County is dry. He is looking for land elsewhere now. If Adair County remains dry, it also will remain an economic backwater. It's a choice we should be aware of as the wet/moist/dry debate rages. Sincerely, s/Wendy Butler Burt Glensfork, KY Here are some related links:
