Scenic Russell Co., KY: The Doughboy is back

2009-01-04 - Jamestown, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
The Doughboy is back, better than ever in the pivot of the roundabout on the Jamestown, KY Square. The one above was dedicated on November 11, 2008, on the same day as a previous one, had been dedicated in 1937. That statue was destroyed when it was struck by a pickup truck on February 19, 2008. The plaque on the monument lists the names of Russell Countians who gave their lives in past wars. The steeple of the beautiful Jamestown Christian Church can be seen between the Doughboy and the stately Russell County Courthouse right. A Today Feature picture

Scenic Adair Co., KY: Roadside car show, Damron Crk. RD

2009-01-04 - District 1 near Eunice, Adair Co., KY - Photo by Ed Waggener.
Two 1955 or 56 Chevrolets provide a roadside old car show on Damron Creek Road, between the Dunnville Road and Russell County. The green car, a 1956 Chevrolet 210 four door sedan powered by one of Chevrolet's first V-8 engines, looks like it could have just rolled off Columbia Motors car lot at 208 Greensburg ST, Columbia, KY, 52 years ago. The "210's" were a middle liine car, between a "150" and the luxurious Bel Air models. The red car has the distinctive 1957 tailfins. Thanks to Kevin Claiborne for the added identification.A Today Feature picture

Hunter Gabehart and his new puppy

2009-01-04 - Knifley, KY - Photo by Debbie Cowan.
"Instead of 'snips and snails and puppy dog tails,' I think that little boys are made of laughter and kisses," writes Debbie Cowan. "This is a picture of my nephew, Hunter Gabehart, and his new puppy, Brownie. Hunter is the son of Columbia Utilities worker James Gabehart and Jennifer Gabehart of Knifley."
