Mary Knights Day: A Day to Remember "There is a generosity of spirit in Adair County which is outstanding." -MARY KNIGHT By Audrey Murphy Adair County Public Library Board gathered together on Monday November 10, 2008. Ellen Zornes, Adair County Schools District Coordinator with the A.C.T.I.O.N. Generation, along with several members from other clubs and organizations gave special recognition to Mary Knight for all her humanitarian efforts to Columbia and Adair County. "I first met Mary Knight when she was substituting at John Adair School," Ellen Zornes said. "Since that time, she has been involved as a volunteer for several of our A.C.T.I.O.N. Generation (Adair Countians Together Influencing Our Next Generation to be Substance Free) program which sponsors and co-sponsors many activities for children and community at large. She's always there without us even having to ask her. Mary Knight has always been active in our community," Zornes said, adding, "And she is a wonderful substitute teacher." After relocating here from Ohio in 1994, Mary Knight has become a part of Adair County. She started volunteering with the Homemakers Club. Since then, Mary has become a part of a host of different clubs here. Some of the clubs she belongs to are the Garden Club, Book Club, Homemakers Club, The Old Home Place, and on the Adair County Extension Council, to name a few. "We have come to believe in Adair County," she says. "There is a generosity of spirit in Adair County which outstanding." The spirit is evident everywhere," she says. Especially heartening, for her, is the interest in the Square. "I am so glad to see that everyone is now taking more pride in the upkeep of the downtown area." Mary said. Her efforts are grand and small. She's been involved in policy setting functions in her role as a board member for the Adair County Library. She helped carry out a sweeping beautification project on the square when Mary Knight, along with other Garden Club members like Lucille Lemmon and Mary Sharpe, transformed the weedy downtown gardens to thriving flower beds which became the focus of community pride. She's volunteered to bake cookies for the Adair County High School to help show support for Project Graduation and the Academic Team, her efforts have helped make her adopted home a better place to live. You get back so much more than you give, she says "When you volunteer for anything you get back so much more than you give," Knight said. "That's why I think everyone should try it." If you are interested in joining a local club here are two to get you started:
