Jim Hadley's Colt .45 revolver once guarded Creelsboro bank Firearm was passed down to Hadley from his uncle, Lige Coffey With one photo By Ed Waggener An impressive sidearm, a Colt .45 revolver, is part of the collection of firearms owned by Jim Hadley, President of Majestic Yachts of Columbia, KY. The pistol was once used to guard the bank at Creelsboro, when the Russell County Cumberland River port had a bank. "It was purchased at the Charlie Maynard sale," Hadley said, "by my Uncle, Lige Coffey. Lige Coffey, was the brother of Dallie Coffey Hadley, Jim Hadley's mother. Lige Coffey was for many years the Russell County Attorney. He began his law practice in the mid-1950s in Adair County, with a law office upstairs over Lerman's in the Russell Building. His shingle read, "W. Elijah Coffey, Attorney at Law." The Colt .45 pistol is a model D-A .45. It is inscribed "Patent August 5, 1884," and carries a manufactory date of 1905. Hadley has used the piece to guard his property--from deer. "I killed a deer with it at my farm in Russell County." He took the animal down from a distance of 30 yards, he said. Now it's seldom fired, retired to it's rightful place as a historic relic. This story was posted on 2008-11-12 10:34:20
