Obituary: Edwin Russell Cundiff, 78

Mr. Cundiff began a distinguished career in broadcast and government in Columbia. He was general manager of WAIN for 23 years and was a leader in civic and Democratic political affairs

Adair County native Edwin "Ed" R. Cundiff, age 78, of Shepherdsville, KY formerly of Hodgenville, KY,passed away Saturday, October 18, 2008, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00pmCT, Tuesday, October 21, 2008, at the Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home in Columbia, KY with the Rev. Dewey Keys and Gary Brown officiating. Burial will follow in the Cane Valley Cemetery in Adair County, KY.



A native of Adair County, he was the son of the late Henry Allen and Rilda Russell Cundiff.

He was a member of the Columbia United Methodist Church.

Mr. Cundiff began a distinguished business career in Columbia. He was general manager and engineer of WAIN in Columbia for 23 years during which time he was a popular on-air personality.

He was a former president of the Adair County Chamber of Commerce.

He later was general manager and engineer for WLCB in Hodgenville, KY, for 7 years.

He was director of advertising for the Kentucky Department of Parks, former park manager at Dale Hollow State Park, Lake Cumberland State Resort Park and Green River State Park, Campbellsville, KY, where he retired in 2003.

He was long active in Adair County politics. He was chairman of the Adair County Democratic Party for several years. He was a delegate to the 1972 Democratic National Convention.

He is survived by his wife, Gail B. Cundiff, and the following:
  • A daughter: Anne (Danny) Compton of Shepherdsville

  • Two sons, Robert (Pam) Cundiff of Campbellsville, KY; and Todd (Lee Anne) Cundiff of Union

  • A sister, Dorothy Holmes of Campbellsville

  • Ten grandchildren: Brittany Cundiff, Marsha Graham, Josh Graham, Brooke (John) Walker, Brandy (Chuck) Bragg, Christopher (Jennifer) Compton, Riley Compton, Tyler Overly, Erin Overly, and Sam Cundiff

  • Two great-grandchildren: Evan Compton and Kelsi Anne Walker

  • Two nephews: Mike (Rachel) Holmes and Maurice (Lisa) Holmes

  • And four great-nieces and great-nephews: Amanda (Aaron) Rowland, Jessica Holmes, Christopher Holmes, and J.B. (Sara) Holmes
Visitation will be from 3:00pm to 8pm (ET), Monday, at the Bennett-Bertram Funeral Home in Hodgenville and after 9:00amCT, Tuesday, October 21, 2008, at the Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home in Columbia.
