Guardrail at Pelham Branch, CWB, slows vehicle in crash Driver taken to WRH in private vehicle following early morning wreck By Ed Waggener It seemed a miracle when 19 year old Patrick Loy, of Hutchison Loy Road, Columbia, was able to walk away from a crash through the SW Pelham Branch Road guardrail at the road's interersection with the soon to be opened Columbia Western Bypass. Columbia Police Officer Kevin Atwood, who responded to the 911 call at around 6:30am, this morning, Sunday, October 5, 2008, thinks that the guardrail, the fact that Loy was belted, and the strength of the 1997 Ford F-150 4WD vehicle may have been the major factors which saved the driver from greater injury. As it was, Loy was able to call his father Autry Loy to come get him. Both his mother and father got to the scene quickly. Patrick Loy was taken to Westlake Regional Hospital in their private car. Patrick Loy was traveling north on Pelham Branch Road when the accident occurred. Officer Atwood and Austin Loy said they were unsure of how the accident happened, but it could have been that the driver fell asleep. The vehicle's trajectory sent it over the guardrail and impact points along the way and vehicle damage indicate that the pickup may have flipped more than once before coming to a rest some 20 feet from an abutment for a drain under the CWB. Officer Atwood said he believed that the guardraiil slowed the pickup enough to allow make a softer landing. Otherwise, he said, the truck might have hit the abutment . The vehicle was removed by Lynn Franklin and taken to Lynn's Service Center, Jamestown ST, Columbia, KY. This story was posted on 2008-10-05 10:03:01
