October 4, 2008 Community Appreciation day at Holmes Bend The 2nd Annual Holmes Bend Pig Roast this Saturday, October 4, 2008, at Rerun's, when Adair County becomes the center of the universe for great feasting and this Jericho Community event a major part of the celebrations in the county By Ed Waggener Chef Rerun Cornelison will be hosting the 2nd Annual Holmes Bend General Store Community Appreciation Pig Roast on Saturday, October 4, 2008. "It's our way of saying 'Thank You,' " Chef Cornelison said. The event puts all eyes on Jericho, the Holmes Bend neighborhood, and Green River Lake this first October 2008 weekend. It's a potluck affair, keeping with the Adair County tradition that great communities are places where people cook for each other and come together for feasting. Rerun will be be furnishing the smoked fattened pig and bread and some of the drinks; residents and regulars are asked to bring potluck dishes. The feast is in addition to the regular service at Rerun's on Saturday. Those who wish can order from the full extensive menu at the restaurant, with cooked to order breakfasts, lunches, dinner items available all day. Chef Rerun first came to fame in Adair County with his game dishes prepared at the Adair County Sportsman's Club events, cooking at the lodge off Lancaster Road in South Columbia with his cousin, Ricky Burris, who is also highly regarded for his skills with food, though Burris has remained an amateur chef. Many a time at Sportsman Club cookouts, Rerun was asked, "When are you going to open a restaurant." When the opportunity came to take over the Holmes Bend General Store, he jumped at the chance. The rest is history. Today, he shares kitchen leadership with Sous Chef Ricky Shelton, whose culinary skills are influenced by his travels throughout the United States, but who still belongs, basically, the the Adair County school of food preparation. "Rerun and I share the same philosophy on food," Shelton said. "We try to experiment along the way. Rerun and I just seem to know how to make regular food uncommonly good. Not bragging, but people tell us they like the way we cook," he said. The highest praise he gets, Shelton said, is when people think meals he prepares were cooked by Rerun. "That's how much in sync we are." As with so many other Adair County restaurants, generous portions are a hallmark. "Nobody ever complains they don't get enough to eat here," Chef Rerun said. That philosophy is welcome on these crisp fall autumn days, when all sense a license to surrender to the primal urge to fatten up for the coming chill. Rerun's Holmes Bend General Store, serving Simply the Best Food on Green River Lake is located at 3399 Holmes Bend Road, Columbia, KY. Phone (270) 384-7253.
