LWC Singers hold 10th Signing of Standards of Excellence

With two photos

By Duane Bonifer, LWC Director of Public Affairs

As America's two major political parties practice their quadrennial custom of making pledges to voters, 26 Lindsey Wilson College students took time on Wednesday night to participate in one of their college's most sober activities.

Members of the Lindsey Wilson College Singers gathered in the John B. Begley Chapel to hold their group's "Signing of the Standards of Excellence," a ceremony that officially inaugurates the choral group's year.

Created a decade ago by the group's officers, the "Signing" is an annual event in which the choral group's members pledge to hold themselves and the group to high artistic, intellectual, spiritual and personal standards.

In addition to performing several times a year on campus and in the community, the Lindsey Wilson Singers make a performance tour each spring to a region of the United States.

This year's "Signing" was also a reminder of the choral group's deep traditions. Prayers read aloud during Wednesday night's ceremony were first offered at U.S. locations where past Singers groups have toured. And passages of scripture were read from a Bible that was a gift from a U.S. Marine Corps chaplain the Singers met several years ago while performing at Camp Pendleton in California.

Associate Professor of Music and Director of Choral Programs Gerald L. Chafin reminded the Singers that the "Standards of Excellence" is an ideal rather than a goal.

Quoting Aristotle, Chafin said: "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act, but a habit."
