Biking: Basic transportation for Lindsey Wilson coach
2008-08-28 - Downtown Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener. LINDSEY WILSON CYCLING COACH DAVID GRIGSBY regularly bikes--for exercise on 30 mile rides around the county, and for basic transportation in town. For him, it's easier-and much faster--to ride to and from the campus to one of his favorite restaurants, the Cafe on the Square on a bicycle than to use a car. Parking is never a problem, and he isn't taking up space a motoring customer needs. He also operates a bike store in London, KY, so usually he has a variety of bikes to ride. This one is a Giant Cypress aluminum frame 14-speed, which costs around $300 new, to as low as $125 for a used one, he said. Columbia is becoming more and more a bike-friendly community, he said, though educating the public of the importance of Sharing the Road is very important. Smart Car causing quite a stir at Don Franklin Ford
2008-08-28 - Hudson ST, Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener. Don Franklin Ford got its first Smart Car yesterday, Wednesday, August 27, 2008, and Sales Associate Steve Smith says it's caused quite a stir. The diminutive car, built by a Mercedes Benz company, gets 43 mpg on the highway, he says, and well over 30 mpg in town. It's price tag is $23,900 for this 2008 practically new car, he said; but, unlike most Smart Car dealer purchases, there's no waiting on this one vehicle. "At dealerships," he said, "you have to get on a list and wait a year." He said he expects a quick sale, though some of the gawkers get a bit cute. "You need to water it," one looker said. 2008-08-28 - 62 Service Drive, Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener. HERSHEY GILES and ADAIR COUNTY SOLID WASTE COORDINATOR A.L SINCLAIR, right, were pleased with the response on the first day of the Adair Recycling Center's Computer and Electronics turn-in. "We've had somewhere between 15-20 people bring stuff in," Sinclair said. The monitors, old CPU, printers and copiers came from everything from a major delivery from the college to smaller amounts from government entities, with many individuals bringing items by. The ARC will be sending the recycled equipment to Commonwealth Computer Recycling Center. For the first time, the County will receive some payment for the salvage material. "We don't know how much," Sinclair said, "but they've promised to pay something. Anything we get will put us ahead," he said. The Recycling Center will continue accepting electronics tomorrow, August 29, 2008, from 7:00am until 3:00pmCT. For more information on the Adair Recycling Center, call (270) 384-4703.
