Epicurean Kentuckian: Green Tomatoes, ready to enjoy

2008-08-17 - East 80, Columbia, KY - Photo By Kristy Keen.
"Green tomatoes, ready to be fried up," writes Kristy Keen. Of course, if this moment is missed, they will make great gourmet tomato sandwiches, or plate-covering tomato steaks. The Epicurean Kentuckian would appreciate the best local area recipe for frying tomatoes, and other tips for enjoying them< A Today, Monday, August 18, 2008 Today's Picture Album photo

    Butterflies: Elusive orange butterfly lands

2008-08-17 - KY 206 near Shepherd Water Tower, District 1, Adair County, KY - Photo By Betty Sue Jasper.

WHEN BETTY SUE JASPER sent us the incredibly detailed photo of the monster bug identified by biologist Alan Reed as a Robber Fly, whose table manners would have shocked Bram Stoker, she was really after this gorgeous butterfly. She writes: Here is the butterfly I was speaking of in my last picture and you can see he is ready to fly away from me before I can get that picture I am wanting! The sun was too high causing shadows and the wind was too strong causing his little wings to flutter and this little guy was in too much of a hurry to pose for me for very long! So I am going outside now to see if he is back today! Many wonder how Betty Sue Jasper is able to improve on perfection, but somehow she always does, with ever more stellar work. If there is a butterfly fancier out there, who'd be willing the science details, it would be appreciated. Flickr. A Today, Monday, August 18, 2008 Today's Picture Album photo

A Perkins: Tomatoes so large, will they fit?

2008-08-17 - Russell Guy Perkins Tomato Patch, North Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener.
A PERKINS: A whole new concept in tomatoes, so big it wouldn't believed if there were photographic evidence. Russell Guy Perkins extraordinary tomatoes are the talk of Adair and Taylor Counties. He's invited a few friends to come by and have one. He keeps them in the buckets on the table in the right foreground. The wonder is, would the bigger one, foreground, fit? And, how long would it feed a large family? A Today, Monday, August 18, 2008 Today's Picture Album photo

    Vanishing point

    2008-08-18 - Photo By Pen.
The most beautiful mid-August in the memory of most Kentuckians carries just a hint of fall in this photo at ground zero on a slow road in the Bluegrass, but the skies are fully autumnal, with October clarity. Tall corn--and is that a black walnut tree ahead--promises another rich Kentucky harvest. Flickr. A Today, Monday, August 18, 2008 Today's Picture Album photo

Birds of Kentucky: Arnold Mayse, hummingbird charmer

2008-08-18 - Glens Fork, KY - Photo By McEva Mayse.
McEVA MAYSE captured this classic photograph of Arnold Mayse feeding the hummingbirds, and writes, "They are Arnold's pets. He has lots of them. He feeds them about a quart of food each day," and adds, "we have about two dozen or so, and enjoy them very much. Sometimes there will beother colors, including the grey ones and some with red, but the unusual ones aregreen and blue, which we had never seen before."
