Adair Countian completes Mt. Washington, NH climb

By Ed Waggener

(Saturday evening, August 19, 2008) - Adair County native Tom Waggener called a few minutes ago from Gorham, NH, to let us know that he had biked up Mt. Washington with about 600 other bikers today, and that his time was 1 hour, 22 minutes.

The race is 7.6-mile miles up, and is called the Mount Washington Auto Road Bicycle Hillclimb.

The mountain is known for the most erratic weather in the lower 48 states, but today, he said, it was nearly perfect for the ride, with 65 degee weather, until he climbed near the summit. "Then it began to sleet hard enough I thought it would break the skin and I'd be bleeding."

That didn't happen, he said, but the climb was difficult. "It was the most grueling experience I've ever gone through," he said.

The best time for the climb was a little over 52 minutes, he said. His own 1 hour 22 minutes, was just over his goal of 1 hour 20 minutes. "I'm definitely going to do it again," he said.

After reaching the peak, the cyclists have to walk their bikes back down the mountain to a parking lot. "The officials won't let anybody go back down on their bikes," he said. "It's just too dangerous."

He isn't the first Adair Countian to have made the climb. David Grigsby, bike coach at Lindsey Wiison College, Columbia, KY, has completed the climb. (If others have done so, we'd like to hear.)

His fiancee, Teresa Powell, was there to pick him up.

They are planning to return to Shelbyville after visiting Fuji Bicycles American headquarters in Philadelphia, PA.
