Trackers: Two of best of Knifley National Cars

2008-08-13 - Robinson Ridge Road, Knifley, KY - Photo By.
THOUGH THE TRACKER ON THE LEFT is shinier and new, one would be hard pressed to call it the best of the cult car in Knifley, but it is a good vehicle, with provenance. It's owned by Wendell Rainwater and is a 1993 model. The Tracker on the right is owned by D.J. Tucker. With those tires, he says, "It will go straight up a phone pole," The farm tractors are just part of qualifies it carry the badge "Tuckerized," The 1991 model also has the distinctive front end treatment. Rainwater makes no brags about climbing telephone poles or anything else he can't back up at the Crossroads Store, can't prove to Arnold Patterson. He does have a hole in the front fender the size of a AK-47 bore, but he doesn't mislead about that, either. That hole was made by a collision with a stag, he says, which just extricated the antler, and bounded off. There's a big reason why the vehicles are so popular in Knifley: "It's the perfect car," Rainwater said. "Look at the doors," he said, "they wide enough for me to get in and out off. They are perfect height and length, and they will go anywhere." Rainwater said there are at least 25 of the vehicles in the Knifley Community. "I have two," he said,"one to drive and one for parts. Most people do." And he's not talking about 25 including the dudified SUV's which followed the First Generation Trackers. The car is a widely favored all over Adair County, but hasn't reached official National Car status anywhere but Knifley. "We can't seem to get enough of them," Rainwater said. "Most of us don't like to be seen in anything else. A Today, Thursday, August 14, 2008 Today's Picture Album photo

Bank of Columbia Christmas Party: 1950s? People?

2008-08-13 - Photo From Collection of Gayla and Darrell Baker, Knifley, KY. GAYLA BAKER, of Baker's Grocery, Knifley, KY, sent this wonderful old photo and writes: "Darrell's Aunt Lou Judd worked for years at the Bank of Columbia and attended church at the Columbia United Methodist Church. She has been deceased for several years. While going through some boxes we found this photo with no information about who the people are or where it was taken. It looks like a Christmas party. Just wondered if maybe someone could identify people or place." The place appears to be the Bank of Columbia. In all likelihood someone will know all the people in the bank at the time. A guess is that the time is the 1950s and it does look like a Christmas party. If anyone has part or all the answers, please send by using one of the Contact/Submit buttons. -EW
Thanks to Lavelle Farris Shepherd and to Alice Keen Curry, the people are identified. Alice K. Curry wrote: "According to my mother, Montra Keen, the people in the picture are as follows: Mrs. Judd, Mary Garnett Holladay, Glenn Keen (my father), Mrs. Lenora Cundiff, Frances Kessler, Mary Russell Baise, Mr. Sam Suddath, Margaret Baker, Joe Dudley, Roscoe Antle and Mr. John Flowers." Thanks! -EW A Today, Thursday, August 14, 2008 Today's Picture Album photo

(ADV) Tracker in excellent condition for sale. $3,500

2008-08-14 - Columbia, KY - Photo By owner.

    1995 Tracker for sale
It is 4 wheel drive, automatic transmission. The body is rust free with some dings that would be common for a vehicle of this year. Interior is in good shape, seats are excellent. Mechanically the vehicle has been one of the best I have owned, it runs great, 4 wheel drive works great, no mechanical problems at all for me. I put a brand new top on it in January because the old one had dry rotted. 110,000 miles. This is a solid vehicle that will get you good gas mileage.$3500 firm. Serious inquiries only please.
