Casey County SCC physical therapy student is well known in political circles, as well, having served two terms in the Kentucky House of Representatives

By Dave Cazalet, Jr., SCC Director of Public Affairs

Jeff Buis of Liberty in Casey County, a student currently enrolled in second-year studies in the Somerset Community College Physical Therapist Assistant Program has been slated to run for national office of the American Physical Therapy Association's Student Assembly Board of Directors.

Buis was selected to participate in the election process at the 2008 APTA Student Conclave October 17-29, 2008, in San Jose, CA.

The Student Assembly is a component of APTA that focuses on issues relating to students. It serves as a voice for physical therapist and physical therapist assistant students from the 485 accredited or developing education programs in the United States.

Involvement in the Student Assembly allows students to learn about issues related to physical therapy, become involved in professional activities and participate in the advancement of the profession.

Buis is well known, having served two terms in the Kentucky House of Representatives, with a number of prestigious committee assignments. Among these were the Judiciary, Labor and Industry and Agriculture and Natural Resources Committees.

He is active in his community, serving as a Board Member of the Casey County Friends of Education and Co-Founder of the South East Casey County and Evona Volunteer Fire Departments. He has devoted his time and energy to many worthwhile causes including the Mill Springs Civil War Battlefield Preservation Society, the United Way, the Central Kentucky Blood Center, the American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society.

Buis currently serves as President of his class and Secretary for the SCC Physical Therapy Student Organization. In 2008, he served as the coordinator for the program's efforts in the Marquette Challenge, a fundraiser for the Foundation for Physical Therapy. SCC was the winning PTA Program nationally in this event and he accepted the award on the program's behalf at the APTA National Conference in San Antonio this summer.

He has participated in a number of events through the PTA Program including teaching students during the Governor's Minority Scholarship Preparation Program, Shoeless Sunday, Bethany House Events, and events for the elderly during Christmas. He is active in the Kentucky Physical Therapy Association and drafted the charter for a statewide Student Special Interest Group, presenting the proposal to board members in the summer of 2008. He was also responsible for securing recognition for the SCC PTA Program from the Kentucky House of Representatives and a Governor's Proclamation for Physical Therapy Month in Kentucky. He was recently published in the APTA newsletter the Pulse in an article discussing fundraising and in this month's KPTA Newsletter discussing the importance of political activism.

"For Jeff to be included among these highly qualified candidates speaks volumes about his abilities and work ethic," stated PTA Program Director Ron Meade. "He has already developed into a great advocate for the physical therapy profession and we are very proud for him to be a part of our program. For a representative of SCC to be seen on a national scale with other students from these very prestigious institutions makes this an exciting time for our program."

Other institutions with finalists on the ballot include: California State University, Creighton University, Emory University, Georgia State University, Ithaca College, Lake Area Technical Institute, Louisiana State University, Medical University of South Carolina, MGH Institute of Health Professionals, Mount Hood Community College, Northwestern University, Rockhurst University, Sacred Heart University, Texas Women's University - Dallas, Washington University, Western University of Health Sciences, the University of Puget Sound, University of Southern California, University of Toledo, University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee, Western University of Health Sciences and Wayne State University.

Buis is scheduled to graduate with an Associate of Applied Science Degree from the PTA Program in May, 2009. He resides in Liberty with his wife Mary Lee.
