Traffic was blocked on Chestnut Grove Road between Breeding and Nell for over three hours on Wednesday, July 30, 2008, following an equipment fire which totaled the Adair County Road Department's tractor and boom mower. The operator, Phillip Carter, was unhurt.

Firemen and ACRD personel believe the fire was the result of a wiring problem.

Adair County Judge Executive Ann Melton visited the scene. "It's was a terrible thing to happen at this season," she said. "We were pushing to get all the County Roads in as safe a condition as possible before school starts next week.

"I know it was a frightening experience for Philip Carter."But," she added, "I'm so thankful no one was hurt and I am so thankful that we have Breeding firefighters who responded so quickly to the scene. They are absolutely, to a man and woman, great."

The Breeding Area Fire Department received a call from dispatch at 2:23pmCT, and was en route by 2:27pmCT, arriving at the scene 5 miiles away, by road, approximately 1 air miles, away at 2:32pmCT.

The road was reopened after Michael Bryant of Michael's Towing Service removed the charred hulk on a rollback. That was at 5:45pmCT.

BAVFD Engineer and Public Affairs Officer Brandon Harvey said that the fire was spotted and reported by Brad Byington, whose place was between the scene and the BAVFD fire station.

The fire was extinguished in about five minutes, BAVFD Chief Terry Harvey said.

In all, 12 BAVFD firefighters responded. In addition, Kentucky State Trooper Jamie Richard, patrolling in the area, came to assist in traffic control.

BAVFD Firemen on the scene were:
  • Terry Harvey, BAVFD Chief
  • Paul Grant, Assistant Chief
  • Brandon Harvey, Engineer and PAO
  • Chris Grant, Engineer
  • Ed Wigal, Firefighter
  • Brandon Elliott, Explorer
  • Jerry Elliiott, Firefighter
  • Greg Collins, Firefighter
  • Cassi Cornell, Firefighter
  • Jeff Cornell, Firefighter/EMT
  • Tony Harvey, Firefighter/EMT
  • Brenda Harvey, Firefighter/First Responder
The tractor and boom mower were insured. A replacement outfit will cost in the neighborhood of $60-75,000. It will take several weeks to get court approval, run bids in the Adair Progress newspaper, and accept and get delivery of the equipment, Judge Melton said. "Financially," Judge Melton said, "we won't be hurt so badly." She added that the big cost will be in time getting right of ways cleared. She added, "I am so proud of what our Adair County Road Department does. Before, I just wanted to brag on them for how hard they all work. Now, we can all see that there's bravery, too. The men and women of the Breeding Fire Department and our Road Department are a big part of what makes Adair County such a special place to live. I want to publicly thank them for all they do, for the example they set for the rest of us."Adair County has over 600 miles of county maintained roads. Mowing both sides means 1200 miles of right of way mowing, Judge Melton said.

WAITING FOR SECOND, BIGGER ROLLBACK. The first rollback sent to bring the burned Adair County Road Department tractor and boom mower was big enough for the load, but owner Michael Bryant opted for a larger one because of the imbalance from the heft of the boom mower itself. At left is Tony Denton. At the rollback are Engineer Brandon Harvey, in the BAVFD's new turnout gear, Terry Williams of the Adair County Road Department, and Engineer Chris Grant with the BAVFD. The view looks toward Nell, some 3-4 miles west.
