The Purpose of the Columbia-Adair County Chamber of Commerce is to Promote and Enhance the Business, Cultural, Educational and Civic Well Being of Columbia and Adair County.

Thought for the Month: "Action is the foundational key to success"

President's Message

What a month June has been for the Columbia-Adair County Chamber of Commerce.

Buffalo Hills Ranch Ribbon Cutting was the beginning of several things happening this month. We were all treated to Buffalo Burgers and Smoothies (the best I've ever had).

The next day we followed up with the Annual Golf Tournament at Pinewood Country Club. Fantastic weather and over 50 golfers made this event another success for co-chairs Monica Rodgers and Stephen Keen.

Ja-Ci's Boutique was where all the women in Adair County were on Friday morning for the Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting. In the words of Ralph Waggener, it was a "Chick Event". Clothes, Jewelry, Purses and more are available without leaving town. As gas prices soar higher and higher, it really is smart to shop at home.

The Chamber Picnic was held on the 17th with a record attendance. Once again, great weather, good company and enjoyable entertainment along with a great meal sponsored by the Bank of Columbia. If you didn't attend, keep it in mind for June 2009. Ann Young, Counselor at Adair County High School was chosen as the President's Guest for June, due to her bringing a group of students to the Roadside Park in the Spring for an excellent job at getting the park cleaned and ready for the Spring and Summer Season.

Thanks to Ann and her students for helping to make "Columbia, Kentucky: A Great Place To Call Home".

Vacation Ideas Close to Home

Did you know that Kentucky has more resort parks than any other state in the nation?

If you are looking for a nice family vacation near home, you may want to consider a Kentucky State Resort Park.

Did you know that Newport, Kentucky is home to "The World Peace Bell", the world's largest free-swing bell? While there you can see the aquarium and other places of interest.

Did you know that the world's largest crucifix, standing at sixty (60) feet tall is in Bardstown, Kentucky? While there tour "My Old Kentucky Home", and see the outdoor drama, "The Stephen Foster Story? Bardstown and Nelson County has many attractions, including the dinner train.

Did you know that in 1937 the first Wigwam Village Motel with units in the shape of a "teepee" was built by Frank A. Redford in Cave City, Kentucky? People come from all over the country to sleep in the teepees. While there, attend the Kentucky Repertory Theatre at Horse Cave and see one of their outstanding dramas.

Did you know that Lake Cumberland has more miles of shoreline than the state of Florida? You can visit the Education Center near Wolf Creek Dam, camp at KOA, fish for trout in the Cumberland River, just to mention a few of the sights.

Or how about spending your time in Adair County visiting attractions and learning more about what your county has to offer? Visit the "Highland Raku Studio and Gallery" where Jeff and Henrietta Scott can teach you about Raku pottery, and see the work of local artisans. If you have not been there, you will be surprised to see the work of numerous outstanding local artisans.

Drive out to "The Hearts Image" and see a ceramic, pottery and sculptures of David Waltz, which are one-of-a-kind. Each item is formed by hand or potter's wheel and pit fired for a weathered look. Visit the gallery/showroom to see these unique pieces.

Good Customer Service: Everything Counts

Every business should train their employees to give good customer service. If you want your business to grow and keep customers coming back, good service is a must! Now that the tourism season is in full swing, remember to be cheerful and friendly and treat the tourist just as you would like to be treated. Make a good impression so the tourist will not only remember you business but will have a memorable experience of Columbia and Adair County. That tourist may one day be making their home in Adair County and will continue to spend their money at your business. Remember, you only have one time to make a good impression!# The sales and customer service experience begins when a customer picks up the phone or walks in the door.

Customers scrutinize how they are treated after the sale as much as they evaluate a business while making the decision to buy. They are closely watching how every situation is handled, especially the difficult ones. From the customer's point of view, if they can see it, walk on it, hold it, hear it, step in it, smell it, carry it, step over it, touch it, use it, even taste it, if they can feel it or sense it, it's Customer Service!

Remember: Everything counts when it comes to a customer's loyalty. There are four specific things that customers say they will never forget about when doing business.
  1. Customers do not forget attitudes. Each member of the team is an extension of the sales and customer service experience.

  2. Customers do not forget promises. Business is based on trust.# When a business looses a customer's trust, there is really no basis for continuing the business relationship.

  3. Customers do not forget how a business handles issues or misunderstandings.

  4. When customers have an issue or misunderstanding, more than any other time, abusiness has the opportunity to develop a bonded relationship.

  5. Customers do not forget what happens after the sale. The best marketing tool available to a business is the customer's satisfaction after the sale. A business can set itself apart by being an after-the-sale champion.
Customers will become loyal if the sales and customer service team develops a "no matter what it takes" attitude, keeps its promises, quickly addresses issues, and takes care of them after the sale. If a business does all these things customers will be glad to come back for more!
