Larry Smith photos from the past: West Fortune Street

2008-06-20 - Fortune Street from High Street, Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener.
Larry Smith, the WAVE FM 92.7 news anchor and South Central Kentucky Historian, sent this fabulous old photo from his collection, with this note, "Here's another photo of downtown Columbia in the WPA Days."
The view is from High Street at it's intersection with West Fortune Street. The broad concrete street with a sidewalk had been very recently built by the Works Progress Administration. A few landmarks are evident. The house on the corner, bottom left of the photo, was the home of the Fred Janes' family, when I first knew it. The Janes' were the maternal grandparents of County Judge Ann Melton. It was the childhood home of Peggy Janes (Waggener), and Jessaphine Janes (Wheeler). The next big house down the hill, which still stands today, is now the Haskin and Cynthia Rowe residence. When the photo was taken, it was likely the home of the Massie family. Later it was the home of President Henry after he retired as President of Lindsey Wilson College, and at one time, Haskin Rowe operated the Greyhound Bus Station and H&H Cab from the residence. Still further down the hill, the white frame building was the garage at the residence of the Morris Epperson family. Mr. Epperson was co-owner of Adair Sales, the local Ford dealership. The car in the distance is on East Fortune Street. There were houses on the right, then. And, most startling when compared today, is the view of a pastoral, farm like scene toward Jamestown Hill. East Fortune Street can be seen to narrow and slightly curve at its intersection with Reed Street, which was itself curved to make room for drive in front of what is now Columbiana, the home of David and Eva Rigney. Across from the Epperson Garage, can be seen a hint of a grand old brick residence, where the Adair County Library was once located, on the mail floor, front. -Ed Waggener. Additional comments, corrections, and stories evoked by this wonderful Larry Smith collection photo are welcome.Clicking Read More accesses the "Today, Fri., June 20, 2008" feature and Today's Picture Album.

Road Eighty Bridge: Looking good. Day 263

2008-06-20 - Road Eighty East, Columbia, KY at Russell Creek - Photo By Ed Waggener.
The Jones-Bourland Company has been making tremendous progress on the Road Eighty Bridge replacement in the last few days. The floor is poured. The concrete side rail on the south side is complete, and, yesterday, Thursday, June 19, 2008, the north side rail had been poured and was curing. The dense grade on the western approach has been packed and rolled and is almost as smooth as the cover's on the billiard tables in a pool room. It looks like a matter of days before the bridge is open again to happy traffic riding Road Eighty to East Adair some of us still remember, and beyond, to the strange, enchanting lands of radio land, Magic Acres, Royville, The County and the depths of exotic Eastern Kentucky.
