Letter: East 80 Bridge 5 months later and still not done Editor, ColumbiaMagazine.com: If my memory is correct the contractor for the East 80 Bridge had 90 days to finish this new bridge. These days excluded the months December, Janurary, and Feburary since the state feels this months aren't warm enough to work in. It has been 5 months and the bridge still isn't done. "What I don''t understand is why the state allowed the demolition of the bridge during these months, since they knew it was an important artery of our community?" quote from my fathers post before. He is right, the state knew the demolition/construction of the bridge would halt during these months? I understand it is hard to jump in between jobs because of weather since my father, Bob Barnes, is a contractor himself. In my eyes though, we haven't had 2 months of bad weather. So I don't see that as a very good excuse at all! Yes, I know it is hard to build a bridge, but an extra 2 months is just ridiculous. This is very hard on people living on East 80 because of the gas prices getting closer to a 4 dollars per gallon. This again is a question. The state knew we would have harsh gas prices because the world IS using up all of its natural resources quickly. It is simple economics. Less supplies, the higher the cost of those supplies, and when you own a gas station you know when there is a lot of traveling involved to raise the prices of gas. So this shows if this bridge isn't finished quickly Adair County will be in a harsher economic state. All of this makes me concerned because of the economic crisis this country is in. I am only 14 and people may think I shouldn't be worrying about this right now, but when I get older I don't want to see an even harsher economic crisis. s/Robert Logan Barnes This story was posted on 2008-05-21 05:09:53
