3 LWC ground-breakings to begin $12 million expansion Monday, May 19, 2008:
By Duane Bonifer, LWC Public Affairs Director Lindsey Wilson College will hold an unprecedented three ground-breaking ceremonies on one day to begin a $12 million expansion program. The ground-breaking ceremonies will be held on Monday, May 19, 2008 The public is invited to all three ceremonies. The $12 million program which is the first phase of a larger expansion for the college includes building a health-and-wellness center, a new baseball-softball complex on the Louie B. Nunn Parkway and an addition to the Sumner Campus Ministry Center. The first ground-breaking ceremony for the Sumner Campus Ministry Center will be held at 10:15amCT next to the Sumner Center. The ground-breaking ceremony for the health-and-wellness center will be held at 11amCT at Lindsey Wilson Park, on the corner of Williams and Young streets. The ground-breaking for the baseball-softball complex will be held at 11:45amCT on the college's property next to the Louie B. Nunn Parkway. "These ground-breaking ceremonies will usher in one of the most exciting expansion periods in the 105-year history of Lindsey Wilson College," said Lindsey Wilson President William T. Luckey Jr. "It will be a very busy time on campus this summer." The 4,000-square-foot expansion of the Sumner Campus Ministry Center and the baseball-softball complex will be finished during the 2008-09 school year; the 70,000-square-foot, two-story health-and-wellness center will be opened at the start of the 2009-10 school year. The plan calls for the health and wellness center to include three basketball courts, two racquetball courts, a weight room, workout rooms, an indoor walking track and a swimming pool. The baseball-softball complex on the Nunn Parkway will do more than provide those programs with a new home it also will assist student-athletes' academic lives. In addition to a field house, the complex will include lights, which will allow the college to schedule home night games. The 4,000-square-foot addition to the Sumner Campus Ministry Center could not come at a better time. More than 150 undergraduate students are involved in the Christian ministries program, which has caused it to outgrow the 3-year-old Sumner Center.
