Scenic Adair Co., KY: A quiet Saturday morning in Columbia

2008-05-10 - Memorable Old Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener.
EARLY SATURDAY MORNING May 10, 2008 in Downtown Columbia. The flower bed on the Old Courthouse lawn is in bloom, and Councillor Joe Moore, standing in the background, says its time to start the fountain going for the summer in time for all the busloads of Canadian tourists to enjoy this summer. With him is Carl Hutchison, longtime Keeper of the Clock in the historic courthouse. Both men were hoping that courthouse could be restored to it's original dimensions, sans the additions. "Visibility would be much better with them gone," Joe Moore said. He thinks the original brick taken out of the building when doors were cut in the walls for doors could be mined from a fill on the Moore family homeplace on KY 55 South. The courthouse flower bed was replanted by the county. There are marigolds, irises, day lilies, geraniums, purple lace, amd little roses. "We'll have flowers through the fall," Lisa Lee, administrative assistant to CJE Ann Melton said.

Scenic Adair Co., KY: Springtime sidewalk dining

2008-05-10 - Downtown in Memorable Old Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener.
MR. and MRS. JOSEPH CLAYTON VANCE of Cane Valley, KY, received attentive service from Ellen Hingle at the Cafe on the Square in Columbia on the Vance's visit to Columbia, today. The restaurant has recently added tables for two in front of the cafe, where diners can get an ever better view of the street scene. That's the Mercy (back to camera) and Obe Hingle seated behind them. The Square was moderately busy when the photo was taken, but at 4:00pm today, it will come alive with a Green River Kruzers old car show, a showing of "Iron Man" at the historic Columbian Theater at 6:00pm and 8:00pm, and a 7:00pm live Variety Show will take place at Columbia's renown Dream Depot just around the corner on Jamestown Street. Another well-known downtown attraction open until 7:00pm tonight is The Dairy Dip, where new table umbrellas have been installed for picknickers. Several retail stores are open today, as is another downtown eatery, Moore's, next to the Columbian Theatre.
