CU Worship & Justice Worship Arts Conference Feb. 28-29, 2008 EVENTS By Joan C. McKinney, director of university communications Campbellsville University's School of Theology and the Reuben and Jewell Robertson Worship Endowment will present "Worship and Justice" as the theme of the university's Worship Arts Conference February 28-29, 2008 Conference leaders will be Eric Bryant, navigator, Mosaic of Los Angeles, CA; Marvin McMickle, professor of homiletics, Ashland Theological Seminary in Ashland, OH, and Nathan Ivey, SEED/Community Development, Sojourn Church of Louisville. There will also be several session speakers. Bryant will give a pre-conference chapel at 10amET, Wednesday, February 27, 2008, in the Ransdell Chapel. Chapel is free and open to the public. Musicians include: Derek Webb, singer-songwriter, formerly of Caedmon's Call, Nashville, TN, and John Mark McMillan, recording artist, Charlotte, NC, and other worship bands. Dr. John Hurtgen, chair of the School of Theology, said, there will be two days of large and small group sessions, and there will be two concerts each night at 7:30 o'clock in the Ransdell Chapel on campus. Webb, a prophetic rock 'n roller, will perform Thursday night, February 28, 2008, and John Mark McMillan, recording artist and worship leader, will perform Friday night, February 29, 2008. "Last year we celebrated both our University Centennial (1906-2006) as well as our inaugural Worship Arts Conference with Michael Card, focusing on the theme 'Lament: Passion and Praise in a Minor Key,'" said Hurtgen. "God is indeed with the lowly and mournful." "Please join a powerful group of speakers and musicians as we reflect on the essential intersection between worship and justice," said Hurtgen of this year's conference. Hurtgen, presenting the conference, said, "If Mark Labberton (The Dangerous Act of Worship) is correct, God is mightily displeased when his people walk away from worship encounters with the living God . . . and no one is changed by the experience. "He asks, "Why do Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego choose fire over idolatry? They know where the real danger lies. They understand that God brooks no rivals. It is better to die than to bow down before anyone or anything than Yahweh." "It may be that the real 'worship war' in the United States may be God fighting against his people to transform them into salt and light for the world and keep them from becoming idolatrous, mirrors turned in only on themselves (to borrow an image from Bishop N.T. Wright)." Hurtgen said, "God in Christ is already 'making all things new' (Rev. 21:5) and the church is to be his hands and feet in preaching good news and bringing 'higher righteousness' (Matt. 5:17) to the nations. 'Rise up, O Men and Women of God,' Jesus says to his church today. Or as David Ruis (The Worship God is Seeking) writes, 'Let worship and justice kiss!'" Registration for the conference is $45, and $25 for students. The registration fee includes conference workbook and tickets to Derek Webb and John Mark McMillan concerts. Conference attendees are admitted free to the concerts by virtue of their registration. Tickets for each concert are $12 for general admission; $15 for artist circle and $8 for students.
