Fire destroys vacant house on Allen Schoolhouse Rd, Sun. AM ColumbiaMagazine.com story The Adair County Fire Department responded to a vacant house fire on Sunday morning, February 3, 2008, at 3320 Allen Schoolhouse Rd, in Adair Co. Upon firefighters arrival the house was totally engulfed in flames and was a total loss. Delores Stapleton, the owner of the house, said that it was used for storage. The fire had been discovered when a neighbor, Katherine McConnell, had walked across from a nearby house to deliver a macaroni and tomato casserole to share with Stapleton. The fire had already fully involved when the firemen were called at around 8:30am, Sunday morning. While no persons were injured in the fire, a tragedy did occur as Jessy, a purebred boxer, was giving birth in a kennel near the house. The mother dog was freed and taken to safety, but four babies born just minutes before were lost in the fire. Besides the house and the items stored in it, a 1994 Chevrolet, recently restored, was destroyed in the fire. The mother boxer had been expected to have 11 puppies, Katherine McConnell said. There were 15 Adair County firemen on the scene for 1 and 1/2 hours. Firemen could do little but make sure the flames did not spread to neighboring buildings and other flammable material in close proximity. For the neighbors and family, "All we could do was to reminisce about the good times we'd had in the house," McConnell said.
