The Rev. Gerald Joiner, pastor of Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Louisville, a Campbellsville University alumnus and member of the Church Relations Council at CU, will be the speaker for the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Worship Service at Campbellsville University Wednesday, January 23, 2008 at 7:00pmET/6:00pmCT in the Ransdell Chapel.

The public is invited to the event which is free.

The Gospel Explosion Choir, a group of about 40 persons from Adair, Green and Taylor counties, will be providing the special music.

Joiner, who graduated from CU in 1975, is the 17th pastor of the historic Zion Missionary Baptist Church. In the churchs 128-year history, it has been led by internationally known ministers W.H. Craighead, D.E. King, A.D. Williams King and H.D. Cockerham, who is now pastor emeritus.

Joiner, who is attending The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, claims the late Dr. C.B. Lucas of Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church in Louisville, as his spiritual leader and mentor.

As a pastor, preacher, teacher and minister of the gospel, Joiner has had the opportunity to live and minister in eight states. His charge, as he sees it, is to carry Gods word and demonstrate the principles of Christian living everywhere he goes.

Prior to coming to Zion, Joiner served as senior pastor of Redeemer Missionary Baptist Church in Minneapolis, MN.; associate minister of Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Roswell, GA; associate minister of Friendship Missionary Baptist Church in Yorba Linda, CA, and associate minister of Emmanuel Missionary Baptist Church in Louisville, KY.

Joiner is an appointed missionary of the Southern Baptist Convention and served on the mission field in Kenya, Africa in 1986. He has also served as director of the Baptist Fellowship Center of Kentucky and as superintendent of missions for the Central District Baptist Association of Kentucky from 1986 through 1988.

From a secular employment perspective, Joiner has held a number of senior management positions for major corporations such as Hunt Wesson Foods, Coca-Cola Foods, Clorox, Pillsbury, Kal Kan Pet Care and M&M Mars Inc.

He is the youngest son of the late Cleo and Doris Joiner of Louisville, KY. He and his wife, Sister Luevern T. Joiner, have two sons, Taurean and Gemayel.
