Chamber Insights: Complete Issue for December 2007 In the December 2007 Insights issue
Chamber Insights December 2007 Welcome to Chamber Insights, the monthly newsletter of the Columbia-Adair County Chamber of Commerce. Editor: Sue Stivers, Executive Director Feature writers: Darrell Overstreet, Vonnie Kolbenschlag The Purpose of the Columbia-Adair County Chamber of Commerce is to Promote and Enhance the Business, Cultural, Educational and Civic Well Being of Columbia and Adair County. Thought for the Month> "This Year's Success was Last Year's Impossibility" President's Message This is my last "President's Message" for the Chamber and it is hard to believe that two years has past so quickly. It has been such an honor and a great privilege to serve as president of the Columbia-Adair County Chamber of Commerce. It has been such an exciting experience to work with so many wonderful people, Board members, Chamber members and Sue Stivers, the Chamber Executive Director. This is the time, by tradition, when the out going President lists all the accomplishments during the past two years. And it is true that a lot has gone on the past two years and many positive things have taken place. But as I have said before, many of the accomplishments took place by other folks and I was not directly involved. There are several things that I am very proud of that the Chamber has accomplished the past two years and one is a closer relationship with Lindsey Wilson College. As the result of a great idea of Ron Heath, and the work of other Board members and Chamber members, the past two years of the Wares Fair involved hundreds of Lindsey students and faculty and over 50 local businesses each year. A great way for the college people to see what our community has to offer. Another item that I am very proud of is the increase in Chamber membership. We have the largest membership ever and we are having the largest attendance at our monthly membership meetings and other events. Sue Stivers has done an excellent job in getting great speakers and the membership committee has worked exceptionally hard in recruiting members. I look forward to this being just a small stepping stone to where we will be in the next two years. Our Christmas in Columbia has made some changes. Charles Grimsley, for years did most all of the Christmas in Columbia by himself and did an awesome job, but he wanted to get some relief and the Chamber assumed the responsibility for the past two years. Dave Johnston assumed the Chair of that Committee and along with other Board members and a host of volunteers made that event very successful. The Roadside Park continues to be something that I am very proud of. Richard Phelps and Sue Stivers have done an awesome job in getting grants and donations for walking trails, shelters and play ground equipment. Richard continues to spend a lot time in seeing that the park looks great and provides a nice area for the entire family to enjoy. We can also talk about "The Folklore of the Old West festival and the Labor Day "Buy, Swap and trade Days that Charles Grimsley has chaired for a number of years. We should be proud to have these events in our community. The Chamber has welcomed many new businesses to our community by having ribbon cuttings with a lot of our Chamber members participating. This year has been our 50th Anniversary. Richard Phelps did such a wonderful job in preparing the highlights for the past 50 years and presenting those to the Chamber. I want to thank Lindsey Wilson college for a great Chamber Christmas Party just a couple of weeks ago. Also a special thanks to Patricia Harper, who is the chairperson of that event. I cannot say enough thanks to Dr. Gerald Chafin and the Lindsey Wilson Singers for their performance. And a big thanks to everyone who attended the party. These events and happenings have been just a few of the things that take place daily at the Chamber. There are so many folks, Board members and general membership, who work for our community and get no or very little credit for what they do. These folks deserve our thanks and appreciation. I ask everyone to help me welcome, Donna Stotts, as the new Chamber President. Donna has tremendous energy, great ideas and I know will be a great president to lead the Chamber the next two years. Under Donna's leadership and her commitment to the job and most important her commitment to Columbia and Adair County, we will see great things from the Chamber and our community. I look forward to working with her and serving as a Board member under her leadership. "Donna, congratulations and you have our support". I must thank Sue Stivers, who has put up with me for the past two years. "Sue, I thank you very much for your support and dedication to our community". Again, let me thank you for allowing me to serve these two years as Chamber president. During these past two years we have seen lots of things take place and I thank God that He has allowed me to be a part of the happenings, not just as President but as part of the community. With all the things taking place in our community now and in the future we can say, "Columbia, KY, A Great Place To Call Home". A Special Thank You to Local Businesses Christmas in Columbia was once again an outstanding event. It was a big success and the day's activities came to a close with the Parade "Under the Lights". According to many folks, it was one of the most beautiful parades in recent years. Without the cooperation of the business community, "Christmas In Columbia" would not be a reality. The Chamber would like to express their appreciation and say a special "Thank You" to the businesses for their financial support of the 17th Annual Christmas In Columbia festival. The Franklins have provided the vehicles for the past several years. Thank YouThank You Our gratitude and appreciation to Ben Arnold for the use of his downtown buildings for the vendors of Arts, Crafts, Baked Goods, etc. Without the use of these buildings, this activity could not be held. Special thanks to McCammish Manufacturing, IMO Industries, Flavor-Rich and the Little League Park for the use of their parking lots for the parade line-up. Another activity held during December was the Annual Christmas Party. This is a time for Chamber members to get to know each other, have time to fellowship, enjoy fun and entertainment. Our Special Thanks is extended to Lindsey Wilson College for being the Corporate Sponsor. The food was wonderful and the Lindsey Wilson Singers, under the direction of Dr. Gerald Chafin, was absolutely superb. Absolutely a great evening!! Your continuous support for the Chamber of Commerce and our Community is a great gift. Commerce and the Christmas Spirit Shopping days and the countdown to Christmas is often measured in the realm of money spent. Commercial successes are evident and calculated with buying and selling. We live in an age of abundance of products that enhance and shape our physical lives to want these products. Christmas is the time for increased monetary commerce. But, Christmas has and continues to have another side. It has been and continues to be a spirit filled time when we remember those less fortunate with visits and donations, send cards to friends we seldom see, put extra effort into entertaining, and attend Christmas plays and concerts. We decorate-expressing through art an emotional side, we listen to instrumental music and cantatas, many that were composed years ago but are still inspirational. We feel the spirit that composers felt and wanted to convey through beautiful sounds. We share customs and carols from many parts of the world increasing our feeling for humanity. We view art masterpieces that communicate this spiritual feeling and nourish our souls. Forms of creativity and getting in touch with our spiritual side are apparent at Christmas. Increasingly, the search for meaning and purpose is a challenge and an opportunity facing commerce that depends only on products and profits. We get a glimpse with the Christmas Spirit that needs to be evident and infused in our lives all year long. A Salute to the 2007 Chamber Members Merry Christmas Chamber MembersMay you, your family and your employees have a wonderful Christmas and may 2008 be your best year ever! Thank You for making "An Investment in Your Community" and we look forward to your continued support of the Columbia-Adair County Chamber of Commerce.
