Church Yard Murder: Competency hearing Nov. 1, 2007

A competency hearing for Wellie Paul Grant, accused in the murder of Columbia businessman Rex Coffey on June 10, 2006 is scheduled for 1:00pmCT, Thursday November 1, 2007, at 1:00pmCT in Adair County Circuit Court.

The hearing is in regard to a motion filed October 12, 2007, by Jamestown, KY, attorney Robert L. Bertram on Wellie Paul Grant's behalf. Judges James G. Weddle order the hearing scheduling the hearing on October 16, 2007. Brian Wright, Commonwealth Attorney, is the prosecutor in the case.



The motion stated, "The records show that the Defendant has continuously, since his incarceration in the Adair County Jail been denied proper care and his prescription medication has been withheld from him. The report prepared by the KCPC, at the direction of this Court, over five (5) months ago set out specific findins that the Defendant was not competent, would not become competent and was in need of specialized additional medical care."

Bertram also filed a lawsuit in Federal Court in Bowling Green on September 25, 2007, against Adair County Jail, William "Bug" Knight, Ann Melton, and the county of Adair, seeking damages for, among other things, pain and suffering and emotional trauma. That suit also asked for punitive damages.

Besides the murder charge, Grant faces charges of fleeing, evading police, 1st degree.

Wellie Paul Grant is charged with the 2006 murder of popular Columbia businessman Rex Coffey, who died on June 11, 2006, at from wounds from a brutal shooting at the picnic grounds at Beech Grove Separate Baptist Church on KY 900 west of Glens Fork, KY, the night before. Wellie Paul Grant was captured a short time later and has been incarcerated since, but following psychiatric tests, he was judged unfit for trial. Related stories:
