Festival dance had cars lined from square to schools Photos accompany this article By Ed Waggener It will be remembered as a turnaround event for Columbia for years to come. Downtown Days would have been a huge success without "Dancing with the Stars," but with it, the two days of fall fun made it spectacular. It took everybody by surprise, especially Rhonda Loy, who, with Sonya Roy, Gina Campbell, Chasity Yarberry, and Jada Coomer headed the Renaissance Columbia organizers of the event. "I expected 150 people," she said. "I freaked when I saw the crowd and knew I had to get out in front of that many people. It was like the nervousness I always had when I was in the band." But she couldn't have done better. Mayor Pat Bell said. "Rhonda is now our Events Planner. "I saw her lead. I saw her communicate. I saw her solve problems. She kept things going." Rhonda is an employee at City Hall, so the Mayor knows her on a day to day basis. Loy was quick to share credit for the success, and and especially wanted to thank all the performers and the instructors, Damon Hicks and JamieMcQueary. "They did a tremendous job," Loy said. And added, "Please say we want to says thanks to everyone!" Mayor Bell said he couldn't believe the crowd. "If there had been one half the bleachers filled I would have said it was a tremendous success," he said. "But to fill the whole gym, both sides, and to have to bring in chairs," he said. "That's amazing." "It was the biggest thing ever in Columbia," Charles Sparks reported, "they were lined up from the old high school to Colonel William Casey waiting to get in," he said. "The Downtown Days Saturday night dance extragazanza had people lined up from the schools all the way down Greensburg Street to the public square," said an excited Larry Smith, who provided the music and lights. He reported Sunday that at least 2,000 people attended the event patterned after the popular ABC television show, "Dancing With the Stars." The number caught even the organizers by surprise. They had only printed 2,000 tickets for the event. It was a huge night for the organizers, for the town, and, very much a huge night for the dance winners, Neal Sneed and Jennifer Cundiff. They won with their performance of "The Jive," taking a perfect score of ten from each of the three public judges and the three anonymous judges in the audience, for a 60 total score. The first place winners also won for the best costume. Second Place was a tie Second place was a tie. Dance partners Charles Grimsley & Amy Thompson, and the team of Rhiannon McQueary and and Andy Parson had matching scores. The Crowd Favorite winner was the team of Rhiannon McQueary and Andy Parson. This was decided by the applause. "Everyone of them were great," Elaine Bennett, Jennifer Cundiff's mother, said. "They all gave great performances," she said. "they all gave flawless performances." Other teams included: Rob Collins (Q104) & Lisa Fisher-Clark (WAIN); Larry Smith (The WAVE) & Kaye Bowman; Lloyd French & Sharon Burton (Community Voice); Chad & Michelle Moore. Alex Arango & Tabitha did not compete. But Damon Hicks and Tabitha Higgins did perform, much to the pleasure of the crowd. Tickets to the show were $5 each for adults, $3 for kids, and some free, and doing math would put the proceeds for this one event in the neighborhood of $6,500 or more. Rhonda Loy said that the money will be used to pay the festival's cost and to put the rest back to produce a better and bigger one in 2008. This story was posted on 2007-10-15 09:58:47
