Feedback: Nighttime Square photo by Pen-Architecture 101 Hi Ed, Check out the "Streamline Moderne" entry on Wikepedia, and you'll see an almost exact match for one of the Square buildings in Pen's nighttime photo. What I remember as the old Young's Rexall building closely resembles the photo in the Wikipedia entry describing this late art deco period. Click Here to check out "Streamline Moderne - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia" Wikipedia describes Streamline Moderne style as having curved forms, long horizontal lines and sometimes nautical features (such as portholes and railings.) It reached its height in the late 1920s. When it was first erected, this structure on the corner of Greensburg Street and the Square must have looked very "moderne" in comparison to the surrounding late 19th century buildings. Just sign me, CM's Architecture Critic (Ann) Thanks, CM Architecture Critic. We agree with you. The former Rexall store does appear to be Streamline Moderne. Your information is very useful documentation. I remember the building before Mr. Young moved the old Paull Drug Company store from what is now Reed Bros. Insurance to that corner location. I believe that it had house a company called "Motor & Electric," before Young Drug opened, with it's wonderful fountain and their carved off the bone ham sandwiches. -EW This story was posted on 2007-10-11 13:00:26
