Gypsy Swing Quartet to perform Wednesday at LWC

By Duane Bonifer

The musical quartet Harmonious Wail will perform gypsy swing music on September 19, 2007 at Lindsey Wilson College.

Harmonious Wail will present Encore Swing at the Hot Club at 7 p.m. CDT on Wednesday, September 19, 2007, in W. W. Slider Humanities Center Recital Hall.

The event, which is free and open to the public, is part of the 2007-08 Lindsey Wilson Cultural Affairs Series.

The band, from Madison, WI, mixes American jazz, gypsy beats and modern folk rock to create a unique, energetic sound.

Harmonious Wail plays in the tradition of Django Reinhardt, a jazz guitar player who rose to fame in Paris in the late 1930s. When he was 18 years old, Reinhardt suffered burns to his hands when his trailer caught on fire. The burns led to a loss of use of two fingers on his left hand.

Reinhardt developed a distinctive playing style because of his loss. Reinhardt formed a quartet and later played regularly in the Hot Club of France. His performances earned him a reputation as one of the best guitarists of his time.

Reinhardt died suddenly in 1953 of a cerebral hemorrhage.

Reinhardts music has been featured in several recent films, including Sweet and Lowdown with Sean Penn and Head in the Clouds with Charlize Theron.
