Billy Fudge essay: The County Divide

About one mile south of the crest of Wheeler Hill at KY 61 & KY 768, rainfall on either side of a house takes far different routes to the Ohio River

By Billy Fudge

While passing through Hendersonville, North Carolina on I-26, I crossed the Eastern Continental Divide. This got me to thinking about Adairs very own Continental (County) Divide, so to speak.

Adair County has two watersheds. The Green River Watershed is by far the largest area in Adair. The smallest is, of course, the Cumberland River Watershed. The point at which two drops of rain falling side by side and each going to a different river is the County Divide for these two rivers.

Of course, for those who have not thought of such things you are right now scratching your heads about this real geographic line and where it is located. I will give you a starting point and you can fill in the blanks. Hwy 768 from Hwy 61 at the top of Wheeler Hill one mile out to my home place is more or less the center of our County Divide.

At my home place water which runs off the front of the house goes into the Cumberland River and water which runs off the back of the house goes into the Green River.

These divided waters do not reunite until the waters of the Green, which emptied into the Ohio between Henderson and Owensboro, are once again joined with the waters of the Cumberland in the Ohio River below Barkley Dam just East of Paducah.
