LWC has new coach for volleyball, tennis

Chuck Amshoff has been named head coach of the volleyball; men's, women's tennis
By Chris Wells

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Lindsey Wilson College has named Chuck Amshoff volleyball and men's and women's tennis coach, the school announced on Friday, August 17, 2007.

Amshoff replaces Audra Nothwehr, who resigned in July after accepting the women's tennis coach position at Southern Illinois University.

"I am very grateful to Lindsey Wilson College for the opportunity to lead the volleyball and tennis programs," Amshoff said. "I believe each program has the basis to compete every year for conference and national championships. A competitive atmosphere and a compelling mission are a few of the reasons I am incredibly excited to join this staff."

Amshoff, a Louisville native, served as head coach at the Kentucky Indiana Volleyball Academy for eight years and was head coach at Presentation Academy in Louisville for three seasons.

Last season, Amshoff served as assistant women's volleyball coach and head men's volleyball coach at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Va. He also spent one season as a volunteer assistant for the University of Louisville.

"The foundation for a very good volleyball team is here, but we have a lot of work ahead of us," Amshoff said. "The ladies are eager to put forth the effort it requires to get better and they understand what it takes to get this program to the next level."

The Blue Raider volleyball team finished 20-15 last season and returns 12 players from last year's squad.

Despite having limited tennis experience, Amshoff looks to continue the recent success of the Lindsey Wilson tennis programs.

"The tennis programs are some of the very best in the NAIA," Amshoff said. "I want to push our tennis student-athletes everyday in practice, conditioning and the matches to reach their potential, so that we can continue the quest for a national championship."

The Lindsey Wilson women's team made its second consecutive trip to the national semifinals last season, while the men's season ended in the national quarterfinals. The women finished with a 19-5 record, while the men ended 15-6.

"Chuck brings a wealth of coaching experience to our athletic department and I'm excited for our student-athletes that he will work with on a daily basis," Lindsey Wilson athletics director Willis Pooler said. "Chuck understands and believes in the mission of Lindsey Wilson College. I look forward to watching the progression of our volleyball and tennis programs, on and off the court, under Chuck's direction."

"I've been very blessed to work for some outstanding coaches that have pushed me in preparation to lead a program," Amshoff said. "I've learned a lot from all my stops that will help me help our student-athletes reach our team goals."

The Blue Raider volleyball team opens the season on August 25 with the Lindsey Wilson Quad at Biggers Sports Center. Lindsey Wilson faces Shorter (GA) College at 11am CT, Bethel (TN) College at 1pm CT and Cumberland (TN) University at 3pm CT.

The Lindsey Wilson tennis seasons begin in March, 2008.
