UK nurse comments on ATVs, kids, crashes, & consequences Allowing unsupervised kids to ride 4-wheelers near public roads is recipe for disaster By Mary Keltner, RN A recent article about young children suffering unthinkable injuries in a 4-wheeler accident brings home, again, the importance of keeping small children off motorized vehicles, especially if they are unsupervised, and more especially if they are near public roads. Allowing this behavior is a recipe for disaster. As many know, I work on the Neuro unit at UK Hospital, and I see a number of patients with grave injuries related to 4-wheeler accidents. Many of them have alcohol involvement, though that's another story. It happens every year when the weather warms up and people get out and do very impulsive, very erratic things on ATVs, with what should have been a foreseen consequence: A terrible accident. Unfortunately, many of the victims will never recover and a good number die. How terrible it must be for a loved ones when the accident which ends or ruins a child's life was preventable, as so many of these ATV accidents are. It's time for parents and adults, lawmakers and law enforcement, to wake up. The latest ATV tragedy should by all means be the last. This story was posted on 2007-07-17 20:48:19
